To Heartguard or Not to heartguard? Hello Yorkie owners, My Nene' has a question regarding how many of you give Heartguard Plus to your yorkies? I took Nene' to the vet 3 wks ago and he was found to be in good health, no parasites, no heartworm and good knees, thank God. The vet recommends that I give Nene' Heartguard plus to prevent heartworm. How many of you use this medication and do you use year long? or just during the spring to summer months (6 mths) only? What has been your experience with this type of medication? Any negative or positive experiences would be helpful. Im suppose to start him off tomorow 10/1/07, your quick response is gladly appreciated. Many thanks, Nene' & his mommy, Maria:confused: :animal-pa |

it only takes one mosquito to give your dog heartworm disease. Heartguard plus is a good prevention medication and i'd give it every month. I give my dog Interceptor every month all year round. its cheaper to do it this way with small dogs because if you only did it seasonally you'd have to do a heartworm test in the spring before you put the dog back on it. Heartworms are something you do not want your dog getting. Its very expensive to treat and can be fatal. Much easier to prevent something then it is to cure it. |

I give it year round. It's very serious if they get heartworms and the expense of treatment far outweighs the cost of the medication. Heartworms can kill your dog, so you really don't want to take a chance. No negative side affects. |

We give Bella Heartguard the 1st of every month. IMO, it is worth the risk of Bella getting heartworms. Good luck! :) |

Many thanks yorkie mommies, for your immediate reply. I will tell my mommy to start giving it to me as scheduled. High Paws to everyone,:animal-pa :animal-pa ;) Nene' |

We give Gracie and Hallee Interceptor tablets. This is same has heartguard but in pill form. We crush it between two spoons and mix it will a little carrot baby food. The block type heartguard just does not work for us because we have to cut it into tiny pieces and Gracie just hates it. We have tried everything to even mixing it with cottage cheese. She just picks it out and won't eat it. Hallee of course eats anything. We switched to Interceptor instead of fighting Gracie over it month after month. We give them it all year round. We have never had any side effects. |

Heartguard I use heartguard. The cost (about $20 for a 6 month supply) is nothing compared to the risk or cost of treatment should she get infected. Both my dogs think it is a treat and give me no trouble taking it. I give it year round since mosquitos are a real problem here in Louisiana. |

I use Heartguard year around. Even though our yorkies are at a lower risk of getting heartworms than your average outside dog, it can still happen and the risk isn't worth it to me. It's an inexpensive preventative, and Lacy loves getting her monthly heartguard chew (or treat as she thinks it is). I've seen what heartworms can do to a dog's heart and lungs...not a good thing at all. Best thing you can do is prevent it |

Both of my doggys get it! Especially out here, I am constantly attacked by mosquitos and the ground is always mushy and damp. They think it is a 'treat' once a month that is different from the norm, and gobble it up. Oh and I use year round also. |

I give Babybear, Bud and Bubba heart guard plus every other month. I was told by a vet that it is actually recommend every 45 days. But it is easier for people to remember every 30 days. Giving it every month is over dosing. I asked because I had heard this before from another pet owner. I just wanted to make sure it was right. My vet has a pomerianin(sp?) and he gives him a heart guard plus every other month. I figured he must know best. The only one I have had problems with is bubba he is a big boy(not yorkie well think his is a 90 pound yorkie.lol) he just got hook worms and is being treated for it. He likes to eat everything he comes acrossed outside. He is only outside for 5 minutes at a time. All three furbabies are house (couch potatoes) babies. Some vets will tell you yes every 30 days others might not and tell you the truth about the product and over dosing of it. I would be curious to know how many vets say yes every 45 days or 30 days. |

both my kids are on Sentinel (heartguard stuff) |

Both of mine get Heart Guard every month. An ounce of prevention is better than the pound of cure for heart worms. |

I give mine Interceptor monthly, year-round. It's cheap for our small dogs and well worth it, even tho we don't hardly have any mosquitoes where we live (Cali) It's a tiny little chewable pill and my girl readily eats it up! |

We do year round here too for my three girls. I was giving Interceptor but I just switched to revolution as it takes care of fleas too. I had a GSD that had heartworm when we got him. It was devestating to go through all the treatment and then lose him. ~Lorene |
