She's getting fat on Primal??? Need expert advice. Kalina is 6 months old and weighs 4lbs 8ozs. I feet her 2 primal nuggets in the morning and 2 primal nuggets in the evening for a total of 4 ounces. She inhales the food and acts like she is still hungry. I occasionally give her RMBs, always lamb, and she gets 1 Sold Gold lamb jerky piece per day during her play training session. The problem is that she is CHUBBY!! I can feel her ribs, but just barely. She is a butterball. Should I cut down on the Primal? I feel like she won't be getting enough to eat if I give her less than 4 ozs a day. |
Is that Raw Frozen? Is she eating the recommended amount for her age/wt? If so....weird that she's getting a little chubbers. That's a tough one. Hopefully, Lara2913 will chime in - bc she has a ton of expertise in Raw... |

Can you give her veggies with the primal? They will make her feel full. |

If you do "cut the meat" w/ the veggie - if you feed them raw, then pulverize; if you steam and pulverize, it will be a bit easier on their digestion - but some nutrients are lost. You probably want to add digestive enzymes too if you go the veggie route. You could also skip the classic veggies and instead add canned pumpkin or butternut squash to each meal - the fiber may help fill her up, and may not be as "gassy"/hard to digest as some of the others. Maybe PM Lara2913 to get her in on this thread? There are other raw folks too here.... |
Dogs on raw usually do inhale their food, its because it tastes so good. There is no such thing as a full dog in my house :D If she is putting on weight then it means she is consuming more calories than she is burning off. So you have two options, either you reduce the amount of food or you increase the amount of excersise. Feeding guidelines are just that, guidelines. It also depends on energy levels, how much excersise they get and how fast or slow their metabolism is. Personally, I take no notice of feeding guidelines and always feed to condition. Don't worry that if you decrease her food she won't be getting enough, if she is getting chubby then she is getting more than she needs :p |
Does she actually have 'fat flab' ??? I say this b/c I thought TJ was my fat little piggy at 7 lbs. BUT, the Vet said he is not fat, he is muscular. And I thought Roxy was just perfect at 5 lbs., BUT, she has FLAB (fat) around her ribs and belly. The Vet doesn't go by weight, she could just grab this fat flab on her ribs and said this is the problem (hahaha) - just like me :D |

Perhaps try and take her for little walks? At 6 months old her growth will be slowing down alot from now on, so the guidelines for raw would be about 3% of her weight. However remember that you feed the amount for their ideal weight, so of you think she is a bit overweight then feed the guidelines for the weight she should be. As I said though I always feed to condition, I also don't feed the same amount every day. If they have a very active day then they get more, a lazy day then they get less. Not dissimilar to myself. |
Feed less and add some drained green beans to the food. |
