My Puppy's Cough Greetings. I'm new to this forum and have just brought home the most adorable, loving Yorkie Pup, Miss Yip. She is 14 weeks old. She is energetic (very), eats a lot, drinks a lot and otherwise "normal." Since being brought home, however, which was 5 days ago, she has a cough, which has gotten worse. As soon as we had her in our possession, she was taken to the vet. The vet said she had a "cold." He gave her Guiatuss Cough Syrup (.30 cc's twice daily as needed) and he gave her Calatrax (antibiotic .30 cc's twice daily until gone) as a "preventative." It appears to me that she has kennel cough, after reading about the symptoms, etc. The cough is a dry cough, sometimes hacking. It is worse at night. My question is this: We sleep with the air conditioner (73 degrees) on in our bedroom. However, in the rest of the house, the air is not an option, as we live in the Caribbean and the house is not built for that. Could this be an irritant? I have felt her tonsils and they seem fine. I just want my new baby to be okay as I'm in love and very concerned. |
Hi when I got Buster he had a cold, and they gave him the antibiotics and the cough medecine. I was told to keep him out of cold drafts, and keep him not too cold and not too warm. I also ahd to keep him away from public places and away from other dogs, so that he wouldn't catch anything else. Anyhow he is doing great now. Good luck with your new baby :) !! |
Has he been tested for kennel cough? Bux got that and it sounded like he was hacking up something all the time. The vet did a blood test to make sure it didn't affect his blood cells and they gave him cough medicine and antibiotics... also, kennel cough really never goes away...so i've heard, so it could just be reoccurring b/c they also told me that it can just go away by itself... |
Suffering the same thing... my babys cough isnt as frequent any more but he was under antibotics called Clavamox. if it is kennel i hear that its a virus to its always gonna be there just have to treat it ... if the cough is more of a hacking and sounds worse then it could be a collapsed trachea that what i was told from my vet. check with ur vet again. |

I wish I was there Pierce had that cough when my daughter got him, what they call kennel cough. There is not much you could do, as I was told by the Vet it will go away on it’s on. I really felt bad for him every time he coughs. I'm in New York and every time we will go out in the cold it got worse. I went on vacation down to Puerto Rico last February. It must have been the warm Caribbean or hot weather that really helped him to get better. At the time he was 8 months and we spend 2 weeks on the beach. Pierce came back home without the cough. So perhaps since you are in a warm climate, you should let him out in the sun for a couple of minutes a day to warm him up. It really works, for the AC in the room just be careful that he is not directly getting the cold air. The cold will make the cough worse. |
