How do you know what is enough food? I was wondering how do you know what is enough to feed my dog? Should I always have food out until the dog refuse to eat? Or should I manage the dog's intake so that it won't get fat and then have problems? |
You know your giving the right amount of food based on your dogs condition, you should be able to easily feel his/her ribs but it should feel like there is a layer of fat between the ribs. If you have to press or you struggle to feel them then the dog is a bit overweight, if they feel too 'boney' with no fat between the ribs then they are probably a little underweight. So if your dog is underweight then you should give more food and if they are overweight then you should give less. It really is that simple, no different to how you might do it with yourself. |
all dogs are different, some you can leave food out and they will manage themselves quite fine. others will eat everything in sight, they have no control and are little piggies. it just depends on your dog, i would experiment first and monitor how your dog is eating if you free feed. most dry dog foods have amounts on the packaging , see if your dog maintains these guidelines. i myself feed both dry and raw. bean has dry out and eats it when i'm at work, but i notice a small bowl lasts her quite a few days. she gets raw food when i come home and that seems to satisfy her, usually a half a chicken wing a day works for her. she is a 6 pound yorkie and has a nice little figure:) |

yes i know the kibble takes longer to digest, she doesn't seem to eat so much of it any more, we have been just starting to switch her over. i check her dish when i get home and there is usually very little eaten, she seems to do most of her eating when i am home, so she gets her chicken then and then is quite satisfied. it is later in the evening around 11:00 or midnight she nibbles on kibble. they sure don't eat much do they. she loves chickens necks to, all i so is say chicky chicky chicky bone and she comes arunning. loves her chicky bones. |
