Allergies? Yesterday I took Aubrey to the vet because he was scratching a lot, and I knew that it wasn't fleas. So they gave him a cordinizone(?) shot. Which cost me a lot. Then they told me the side effects to it, drinking a lot. So I noticed that he was drinking a pretty good bit, and last night when I took them outside before bed, he didn't use the bathroom. THis morning he was up at 7 sitting by my door, didn't cry or scratch, just sat there like he normally does. Then I hear this noise, I look down and hes peeing :eek: :eek: !!!!! So now, I have to go home and clean the carpet after work. So, I hope this shot works, that way I don't have to get allergy shots. But they told me not to get really addicted to it, and try not to bring him in every few weeks. |

I feel bad now, and I went to a doctor that I usually don't take them to. So I am going to talk to my usual doctor if this shot doesn't work. It might just be somehting in the air, or something in the house, that is passing on. |
Maybe you can try using Benedryl... I noticed this year is pretty bad for allergies... my Butch was sneezing and sneezing and sneezing (it hadn't rained here for the whole month of August... pretty dry outside). I had to take him three times during one week for Batril and Antihistimine shots.... but once the vet told me to start him on Benedry he got better. He is fine now. Now me... if I don't have a headache.... my nose is stuffed up! (but enough about me!!) :D Anyway... I think the Benedry (Children's brand) should help with itching also. Good luck. :) |

Sorry to hear your little one is suffering from allergies. Poor Sophie's have been so bad this year. She was taking Benadryl at the beginning of Spring and it was working good for a while. Then the itching got worse so we took her to the vet and he put her on Hydroxyzine. He said it is stronger than Benadryl and it was safe to take long term. It really helped a lot until just recently she has been scratching again. My allergies have recently been bothering me really bad to so I figure that is why hers are acting up again. I will be so glad for cold weather so we can stop the meds. I would talk to my regular vet and see if they can get something worked out for you. Good luck. I know how frustrating this can be. |

He might, he still scratched some before I changed his food.. the vet said that I can put him on a 12 wk. diet to see if its his food, but I don't like the food they use, its crapy to me.. |
I have a question about the BATRIL. How much did you give your baby (mg) daily and for how long? How much did he/she weigh when you gave it to her? Did he/she have any bad reaction to it? Deucy is not well and the vet prescribed this Batril today for me to start giving him 10 mg daily..I'm afraid to give him ANY until I hear from someone on YT..... We have a dog with allergies (severe) and it is true that steroids can suppress the immune system (some for a long time, like Vetalog) and therefore complicate the situation. We took our dog to a dermatologist 5 years ago and that really helped. We put her on Atopica (neoral solution) and changed her diet to a home cooked vegetarian diet. This really worked far better than any steroid or antihistamine every did. Lots of luck to you, I know this stinks! |
Info on BATRIL please Has ANYONE had to give BATRIL to your toy yorkie???? I need info before I will give Deucy is first tablet today. He is not well. Anyone????? |
Callie was having bad skin allergy brake outs starting last year and they gave me hydroxyzine for the itching but I had to keep in eye on her skin to make sure the little bumps she would get weren't turning very bad because then it became a skin infection (from her scratching) and she had to have antibiotics. We also had to go on a special diet to rule out that it wasn't a food allergy. She hasn't been to bad this year but shes now having watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing so the vet told us to use benadryl for that but her skins been pretty good (I do a little check if I see her scratching and I check very good before every bath). I bathe her once a week with pet head feeling flaky shampoo and that gets any pollen or allergins off her skin and hair and the shampoo keeps her from getting itchy. But it is very very important to keep an eye on the skin to make sure they dont get a skin infection. When shes having a bad itchy day and the meds are not working or dont seem to be wworking I keep a tank top on her so she cant scratch anything open (normally the ac makes her cold anyway so this works ok for us). |
Have you checked that the itching is not caused by any plants in the garden/park? Check online which plants could cause reaction in pets. This is from Australian web: "In your backyard, common garden plants and grasses can cause an allergic reaction in dogs - Wandering Jew, paspalam and rye grass can give dogs itchy feet and legs, as well as stomach rashes. Mow your lawns to stop seeding, or keep dogs in a mown area only." (Pets and plants) Pepper had some very itchy skin a couple of months ago, and the vet thought it was flea allergy/dermatitis. It turned bad really quickly, with Pepper breaking his skin when scratching and biting himself. He had to wear a plastic collar (which I still want to replace with the fabulous soft fabric Bo-collars from Yorkie member "Mom to Hot Rod") and was boarding with the vet for 2 weeks. I gave Pepper and all cats of household flea treatment, then kept vacuum cleaning the whole house every day for nearly a month. It got better. But what a lot of work! I did not want Pepper to get any cortisone treatment, as he was on high doses of steroids as a puppy (seizures after vaccination), and I am so concerned about possible side effects. Don't even like flea treatments... Anyway, the dog groomer who came to our house, also found an 'itchy plant' in our backyard. Well, there you go. Good luck! (spell check does not work.
