When to worm puppies? Hi, my 5 little ones were 12 days old today. They are really shiny and healthy looking. When am I supposed to worm them and how? What product? (As you can tell I don't know much about raising these little ones. Not sure I will breed my Shadow again. lol) |
Worming puppies I like to use Nemex 2 & you should worm them at 2,3,4,6,8,&10 weeks thats what the bottle says. You can get it at the vets or maybe at your local feed store. That's where I get mine. |
puppies I have bred 35 yrs...I never worm a Yorkie until I get a stool sample. I kept all adults worm free and the environment..inside and out parasite free. wait until 6 weeks and get a stool sample...if you are concerned you might be able to get on at 4 weeks. One or two is enough..if one has worms, they all need worming. It might be wise to worm large breeds often, but it is a sure way to lose/sicken/weaken/ a litter worming so young and so often...but this is why we all can get along here..we all can agree to disagree.. Best wishes |
Thanks I think I will seek my vet's advice. I can't see how they could be wormy. They are not outside in a dirty environment and their mom has never had any worms. They are in my den and the bedding is washed every 4 or 5 days. I read that almost all puppies have worms by 3 wks. but I am not sure I believe it. Thank you both for your input. I am inclined to follow the advice of the lady that has been raising them for so long. I won't try to worm them myself anyways. They are so little I want a pro to do the right dosages, etc. Thank you both for your help. :-) I guess with puppies like everything else in life, there are many philosophies how to do things. |
worms A lot depends on where you live and how your dogs live..how many you have, the breed etc..I can recall no more then 4 to 5 positive stool results for worms and that is alot of poop in 35 yrs..but I wormed all adults twice yearly and treated the yards twice yearly also...and all pups had 2 stool checks before leaving...but I have routinely wormed 8 weeks olds from time to time if they were not tinies. Tape worms are totally different..they come from swallowing a flea..and you will need vet meds for them. |
