Food - What would you do? My girls have been eating Merrick's for a few months now. The last time I went to the store I bought 2 bags and mixed them together, Puppy Plate and Cowboy Cookout. Well a few times when I scooped out the food from the container, I found a few plastic type things. Picked it out threw it away. Tonight I scooped out some food and there was like a big short haired black hairball (best way to describe it) Ive seen it on the floor before, but I thought it was something maybe we brought in from the outside, never thought about it coming from the food. I had a bag a RC YT28 downstairs, thats never been opened and I cleaned out their bowl and put that in their bowl just because I was upset what I've been finding in Merricks. Daisy was on RC YT for awhile until Jersey came and Jersey didnt want anything to do with it. So I switched to Merricks because of that and the recall with RC (even though the YT28 wasnt involved). I did a search on here and actually its the first time I read the protein was high for a Yorkie. Daisy is 2 and 5 1/2 pounds, Jersey is 9 months and 2.9 pounds. I would like to hear some opinions because now I'm not sure what to do. Am I just being paranoid? Is RC YT28 really too high in protein? I'm just so lost anymore, everytime something good is going, something goes wrong. Thank you for your input  |
If you're finding things in their bags of food, I would be putting in complaints with Merricks...I don't find that to be acceptable. I have read somewhere else recently that someone found hair in their bag of Merricks cowboy cookout (I think) also... 28% is on the higher side of what a lot of people on here recommend, but then again, it all has to do with the quality of meat that's in the food. If it's a super premium high quality food, then 28% is okay as long as your dog doesn't have liver or kidney issues.... Maybe you can try to find something else that both of your doggies like. Good luck!! |
Good question i would like to see the responses! |
I would send in your complaints to Merricks. Make sure you do so in writing-via email or regular mail, and keep copies for yourself. If you don't hear back from them in a week or two, write again, until they give you a response and an explanation. I would also keep or take pictures of anything that you find in the food, so that you can show them what it is, they can prevent it, and so that you have proof. |
Personally, I wouldn't trust the food. If you are finding things in the food that don't belong there it tells me that they don't use use very clean practices and if you are finding things in there than imagine what is cooked into the food that you can't see. I would definately make sure they know what you have found though. |
I highly reccomend chicken soup and canadea. I switch back and forth from those two with NO problems. I like to give them a variety. And thats just gross about Merricks. I'm not going to buy their can food anymore  |
I saved this hair type thing, the first few plastic things were thrown away but I'm sure I can find more. I know Merricks is said to be a great food, but I cant let them eat that. I am going to go through the good in the morning and then write them and hopefully have pictures of the plastic things. I cant stare at this hair thing anymore, because my mind is going nuts thinking of all the possibilities of what it could possible be and be from. |

here's the thread, with links to sites that discuss it.. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93806 |
We had just bought a 40lb bag of Canidae in search for a good food when that bussiness started. So now I have given up on even the premium brands and will just be cooking from here on out. |
I wouldn't trust it, if thats what is getting into the bags you don't want to know what might be accidentally cooked into the kibble! Definitely make a complaint. Protein wise I am just not a believer of low protein diets, as long as they are healthy with no liver issues then high protein is IMO the best thing for them. Its their natural diet, dogs don't need any grains as they can't actually digest them properly, they are just fillers. TBH I don't trust any commercially produced food anymore. |

I'd bring back all the bags of food I bought and get my money back, and I wouldn't buy them again. |
