Too much Walking???? I take louie out for about a walk a day, but i was wondering if it is possible to walk too much. we walked for about an hour and a half. I made sure i broght water with me though. |
Ive posted on conditioning and exercise before so please check my old posts. I went into GREAT detail on this topic. In short, there is no such thing as too much walking for human or for dog - but you must be sure that your dog is physically fit enough to meet the demands you are making of him and her and in the summer you must also be aware fo the signs for heat exhaustion. Always bring water with you and let your dog sip (not gulp) the water periodically. If you are hot, assume your dog is hotter (she can only sweat through her paws). Keep her wet = esp. on the stomach and pads of her feet. Start out with short walks and GRADUally build. If she isn't mushing ahead, assume she is tiered, pick her up and take her home. Better to err on the side of caution that risk a visit to the emergency room. Overall, walking is GOOD for her and the more exercise you do, the healther she will be. Before I injured my back and my dog developed Addisson's he and I used to RUN two miles every day - and yes, he is a Yorkie. |
ill check that thread out. Thanks! |
Not sure how old louie is but a PUP can be walked too much! Their litle bones are still forming and care must be taken. I agree that adult yorkies can cope with almost anything!! Ana xx :aimeeyork |
I have just started taking Chewy on daily walks and I alternate walking and carrying - He is 4 months old. We are in NYC so he is walking about 20 blocks a day which is about half an hour. I give him water and when we get home he takes a looooong nap. |

Good catch Gypsy Rose! Yes, I didn't know that this was a puppy we were talking about. THAT DOES CHANGE THINGS. Be careful with a puppy. Esp. in NYC. Another thing you need to be aware of is that your puppy can pick up all sorts of things (buggies and all) on city streets. Sorry I didn't ask the age of your dog! |
you guys are so diligent!!!! I am fairly watchful of where Chewy is walking and he does have all of his shots. If I see anything suspect I just scoop him up. Should I be worried about anything??? I walked my last dog all around the city and never had any problems and I do see a bunch of small dogs in my neighborhood, including lots of yorkies. |
Stewie walks all over the city, but I didn't start until he had all of his shots. I took him downtown once and was in a hurry, so I picked him up. I've also taken him onto a forest preserve trail in the suburbs. He had a great time and walked about four miles (with water/rest breaks) |
Otis walks about 45 mins a day, and although I bring water, he never wants to drink it. I do drench him with water, though, on sunny days so he stays cool. |
