Costco Dog food, Kirkland Premium dog food.
 

I went to Costo yesterday and realized they sell kirkland brand Premium dog kirbles and canned food. I checked the ingredient it has the following: Lamb, Lamb meal, whole grain brown rice, rice flour, white rice, egg product, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved witn mixed tocoperols and Vitamine E), beet pulp, potatoes, fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, milet, brewers dried yest, carrots, peas, choline chloride, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, taurine, vitamin E suppliment, iron proteinate, copper proteninate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteniate, manganous oxide, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 supplement, menadione sodium bivulfite (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
$17.99 for 40lb bag, good price. What are the expert's thoughts on this brand?

I have heard that Kirkland measures up real well to some of the top brands.

The recall was due to corn canned food, not kirbles.

I would never feed anything containing Menadione.

from what I have heard, Kirkland brand is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods. I'm not sure how they compare, but I know a few yorkie owners that feed the Kirkland brand.

I am really impressed with the ingredient list for a store brand, however, I also wouldn't feed menadione. I also wouldn't feed the brand because of recalls.

I feed it to our Shepherd and he does very well on it. ISn't menadione vitamin k? I can't afford to feed him the same thing that I do our Yorkie.. He is a BIG dog and eats a lot! To me this is the next best thing. He use to have a lot of gas and now that has cleared up. Diesel even likes it. I don't have any complaints with it. I guess everyone has to do what they think is best.

i am new to the forum. i was enjoying reading and learning all kinds of new things. i have a question about the #4 person who said they would not feed anything to their yorkie that contained menadione. i thought that was vitamin k. am i wrong? please explain. thank you.

It's K3, not a good Vitamin K.

Also, BARLEY is terribly allergenic.

our vet said they same thing, that he doesn't understand why food producters would add this ingredient.

okay, so this is my first yorky, i absolutely love her, i want to feed her whats good for her so what does everybody feed their babies, sophie is 7 months old. i was told kirkland brand costco was a good brand but i certainly do not want that menadione in her system now. what does everybody suggest?

Here is some reading I did on Wikipedia about Menadione.. since I didn't know anything about it. Sounds like it is okay in small doses but still seems kind of risky..

Menadione is a polycyclic aromatic ketone, based on 1,4-naphthoquinone, with a 2-methyl substituent.

It was formerly sometimes called vitamin K3, although derivatives of naphthoquinone without the side chain in the 3-position cannot exert all the functions of the K vitamins. Menadione is a vitamin precursor of K2 which utilizes alkylation to yield menaquinones (MK-n, n=1-13; K2 vitamers), and hence, is better classified as a provitamin.

Despite the fact that it can serve as a precursor to various types of vitamin K, menadione is generally not used as a nutritional supplement. Large doses of menadione have been reported to cause adverse outcomes including hemolytic anemia due to G6PD deficiency, neonatal brain or liver damage, or neonatal death in some cases. Moreover, menadione supplements have been banned by the FDA because of their high toxicity. Menadione has been used experimentally as a chemotherapic agent for cancer, ca 1945, but has lost ground to much safer, human form, vitamin K2 vitamers. Low level menadione is still used as an inexpensive micronutrient for livestock in many countries.

Lately, menadione has been mentioned again as a treatment for cancer in conjunction with vitamin C (See "The end of cancer" by April Kirkendoll) but modern researchers and trials are investigating nontoxic K2 vitamers such as menaquinone-4[1] in conjunction with more comprehensive regimens.

You can more than likely pick up any type of commercially manufactured product and find something in the ingredients list that you aren't 100% comfortable with feeding your little one.
Also, remember that what is best for one person's pooch may not be the best for YOUR little one. Research and find a product that has something to offer that you like and then try them out. You will know when you have found a good match for your baby from the results you see.
Also, there is a sticky at the top of this section that gives you contact information for various manufacturers that will often send you free samples to try or coupons for their products.

thank you so much for your reply. i have since purchased Dr. Pitcairn's book and i am working my sophie into a raw diet. i'm just a little confused about if i am feeding her an all raw diet, exactly what supplements should i be giving her. i have also found a holistic vet in ocala, fl (i live in jacksonville, fl) and already have her on nosodes instead of getting her vaccinated. any suggestions on vitamins and/or supplements would be greatly appreciated. byeee:

Glad I'm not alone!:) Like I said, it's a good site to INCLUDE in your research, so long as your research doesn't begin and end there.
(The top ranked foods on that site almost killed one of mine and sent the other to the emergency vet, so clearly it's not a 'good fit' for every dog.)
