What do you guys think? One of our IT people is a very serious and strict Vegan. Lately she has been trying to convince not only me to become vegan but for me to get Bruce to eat a vegetarian diet...I do not buy it...I am just wondering I guess since there is such a huge array of diets all of us feed, if anyone has tried this, and if maybe I am being too snotty just rejecting the idea completely?! http://www.vegetariandogs.com/ |
I always thought dogs needed protein but I am not sure. I thought I saw on here someone that has liver problems that is on a vegetarian diet and doing very well |
Hmmmmm, I can't imagine not feeding my dogs a diet with protein (meat based).... |
Well... I wanna start by saying "It is only MY opinion" and that's all... Okay... I think dogs need meat on their diet, because they are carnivorous animals... Veggies are very important too, but they can't be all in dogs' diet. |
A friends daughter is a veggaterian and so were all 6 of her Chi's. They lived very healthy lives and died at average ages. She still has two, 8 and 10yrs. Tofu was put in their diet's and I think that replaced the protein along with other foods. No sure what they were but they never had meat of any kind. So it can be done if it is started right away and done properly I guess. |
I agree that dogs need protein from meat. I don't even know if just veggies are good for people. |
in my opinion i don't think its right to put your dog on a vegetarian diet if its not needed because its what you eat and believe in. yes dogs are omnivores, but the main ingredient in their diet should be meat. dogs are descendants of wolves, and what wolf do you know that eats a mainly vegetation diet? none. i don't think people should force their beliefs on their dogs. just let them be dogs. |

I think a vegetarian diet for a dog is complete crap. That is so unfair to subject a dog to a diet like that just because it's what you eat. Dog's are not the same as people in their dietary needs! They can't just eat veggies and be healthy and grains are really not too good for dogs. I try not to give Lacy or my cats ANY grains at all. What would a dog eat in the wild? Meat from an animal it kills. A prey-model diet is 95% raw meat, bones and organs and 5% fruits and veggies...No grains at all. The "average" lifespan for domesticated dogs is pretty low (12-15 years for small dogs) compared to how long dogs can live in the wild (up to 30 years). I just think it's really wrong to not feed your dog any meat - they need meat-based protein in their diet. Plus, what do you think a dog would rather eat - veggies or meat? I know my dog won't even touch veggies unless they are ground up in her food but she loves meat. I really don't understand vegan diets anyway - animals were put on this earth for us to eat... There's a food chain hierarchy and that's just how it works |
In my opinion its absolutely despicable, I was a vegetarian for a few years (not any more) but I never tried to force that on my dogs. Offer your dog the choice between meat and tofu, see which he chooses. I believe in feeding my pets a species appropriate diet so I would never feed my dogs (or cat) a veggie diet and I would never feed my rabbits meat. I feed them what they were designed to eat. |
I personally believe that dogs should eat meat, because they are by nature carnivores, and they LIKE to eat meat. I keep mostly vegetarian, but that is my conscious choice, and I do it for my own reasons-but I do not force that upon anyone else-including my husband, and certainly not on my dogs. With all that said, if you really felt strongly about your dog eating vegetarian meals, I think there are ways to provide healthy, balanced meals for them without including meat. There are other protein sources, and if the recipe is formulated in the right way, I think it could be ok. Not something I'm going to try any time soon, though! |
