Tapeworms I think that my Rusty has Tapeworms, and of course our vet is closed until Tuesday! Do I need to take him to Urgent Doggie care or can it wait a few days. In his Poo was little white things moving around? I think he got in the neighbors cat dooker? Gross  Thanks for your advise. Have a great Labor Day! |
Hi there! How old is Rusty and how much does he weigh? How long have you had him? Gizmo had tapeworms when we brought him home from the breeder. It can take thirty days to cycle to the stage where you see the segments, and yep, sounds like the little guy has tapeworms. Sorry! Tapeworms are caused by eating a flea. Has he been treated for fleas? I think your decision about whether or not to wait until Tuesday for treatment would have to depend upon his size and age. Gizmo was given one little pill, so the treatment is not bad. Hugs! Been there, done that. |
In general treatment for tapeworms isn't an "urgent" care thing. |

The vet will give you a little pill to give your baby. Even though Hallee was the only one we saw with tapeworm, the vet recommended we treat both. Be careful, because humans can get it from their pets. |
I'm sure you can hold out until Tuesday. I know this sounds crazy, but if he'll eat sauerkraut give him some. It's a home remedy to get rid of tape worms. |
Thank you all. Rusty is going to be 1 :) Sept. 4th and he weighs about 7lbs. We treat fleas with advantage. But this year it doesn't seem to be working as well! I will call my vet first thing Tuesday morning! Thanks again. |
tapeworms Topaz had tapeworms and it was on a week end so I got a treatment from pet smart and it took care of it right away. However I did some research on the interner @ tapeworms and found a web site that sells the same thing the vets use. It is a cure and prevenative. It is called tapeze and you use it 3 days out of each month. It is great. I haven't had a problem since. |
Yep, it can wait. And yes, I've heard that fleas are really bad this year. Poor little thing. The vet will fix you right up. :) |

She had to be treated twice - the second time was about 4 wks later. Keep checking his poo just to be safe |
Gizmo did too. Thanks for mentioning that! My vet didn't warn me, and I was rather upset about it. He hasn't had them since. |

My vet said the tapeworms that dogs get will not affect us. Unless you eat a flea! LOL. They are not contagious unless the others eat the poo or a flea that has it. And yes, it requires two treatments. An initial one and then one later I think three weeks, but not sure about that. |
