Feeding wet food? In my search for Wickett's favorite dog food I called up all the 4 and 5 star companies and requested samples of their dry foods. Natural Balance also sent along some samples of their wet food. I've given a bit of it to Wickett twice (once a few weeks ago and once last night) and he has gone absolutely NUTS over it!! Gobbled it up in seconds and licked the bowl clean. Wow! So.....is it bad to occasionally give him a treat of canned food? I know that they should be on a dry food diet because of their teeth, but does a little bit of wet food once in a while as a treat hurt? He just likes it so much! I've still got plenty of sample left, so I won't need to buy any for a while. Just wondering if it's ok, since he won't get it enough to become habitual or to keep him from wanting his dry food. |
It is perfectly fine to feed wet food. Although a lot of people think that dry food is better for teeth, that really has never been proven. At most it makes them a bit stronger and scrapes a little bit of tartar off. Ellie went a few months with only soft homecooked (no kibble) and did fine. I personally wouldn't feed Natural Balance though, because some of their food was recalled, but that is just my opinion and others on here do feed it. |
Its fine to feed wet food in fact alot of research suggests that it is better as it is less processed. Its a myth that dry food cleans the teeth, if you ate nothing but cookies would you still brush your teeth? Remember though that the most important thing is the quality of the food as opposed to the form it comes in. |
I agree whole-heartedly with the above posters...Canned food is actually supposed to be better for them than dry food because it is less processed like lara mentioned and because it contains more moisture that dogs need. Just make sure to keep the teeth clean. Dry food is not "better for their teeth." You might want to use a product like Petzlife oral gel to brush their teeth and a baby finger toothbrush... |
I already do brush his teeth.....for the little bit that he still has toothpaste to lick off so I can move around and scrub as best I can ;) I just want him to have a healthy variety of foods. I didn't know about the Natural Balance recalls though! What do you guys use? Wickett's dry food is a mix of Artemis puppy and Fromm's Duck and Sweet Potatoe. So I could add some wet food maybe at night to give him variety since it's not as bad as I had read. |
good question... and lots of good answers ... thanks ... |
I feed my dogs only homecooked meals with added supplements, no dry or canned food. I have heard of many foods that people have fed their yorkies with success including Innova(www.naturapet.com), California Natural(www.naturapet.com), Canidae(www.canidae.com), Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul(www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com), Solid Gold(www.solidgoldhealth.com)... It sounds like you're feeding high quality foods already :) So, you might just try getting one of their canned foods :) |
My vet recommends dry food, but I still give them wet food once in a while, because I don't want them to get use to it. They do love it though. |
I feed our babies both wet and hard food. We feed them Natural Balance dry in the blue bag. We stopped feeding them Natural Balance in the wet when some of it was recalled. We have now went with another wet food that they just love that can only be purchased at the vet. The vet said it is very healthy because it is made from real chicken and rice. |
Mine both get moist food every morning then leave dry out all day |
