Coughing noise Okay, I just recently noticed that my Dunks makes this coughing noise, kinda like when a human have a lugee (spelling?) stuck in their throat and they make that noise to get it unlodged from their throat.. well I've noticed from the past few days that Dunks had been doing that. Like there is something stuck in his throat that he can't get out. He doesnt do it all the time... but it just freaks me out - is there something wrong with him? :( I give him raw hide, bone marrow treats (from Purina), those raw hide twisty things with the liver/marrow/peanut butter treat in the middle... are those bad for him? I know raw hides are not good for them, but he chews his rawhide really well so I am not very concerned that he might choke on it... Help... Thanks! |
noise How old is he? When Zoey was little she did it a LOT whenever she was around Bella(diggy4) and they would play all night. It would freak me out and I was at the vet all of the time. Because they are so little they are prone to the collapsing trachea and I believe it just gets irriated when she is exercising a lot. Now she only makes it when her and her little brother are frantically chasing each other around the house. We just make her stop and after she settles she stops. |

I hope its nothing major.. I am nervous now... |
Rex recently had a similar issue. I found out that he was choking on some of his beard hair. He finally hacked it up, although it was still connected to his skin. |
the fear with rawhide is not just the fact of getting choked but also what would build up in the stomach. it is not digested. are you sure it is not reverse sneeze that you are dealing with? I can look up the details for you and post them. i have one that has reverse sneeze ... scared me when he first started doing this. |
check this out.. i have not yet read all of it but it looks like it is good info. (just in a hurry to get it to you);) http://www.papillonclub.org/Education/trachea.htm |
My boys do it all the time. When Riley was little, the vet asked if he'd started the "Candian goose honk"! Vet said it was very common and nothing to worry about.. |
BoBo loves to swim...sometimes after a swim, he makes this same "coughing" sound. I've wondered if he swallowed some water wrong or something. ...my poor baby...sometimes he sounds terrible! |
Sounds like an "inverted sneeze". It can go in episodes of fits that seem to last forever and other times it's just a few good snorts...for lack of a better word...and it passes. You can ask your vet about it and he'll tell you that they're considered harmless, just worrysome to unsuspecting owners. What causes it? Who knows. Some say allergies, others say an irritation in the back of the throat or in the sinus cavity...others say exercise alone does it for their dog. My folks male does it once in a blue moon. |

After about 2 days of giving Dunks his antibiotics, he stopped coughing... So I don't know... We'll see after he gets off the meds if it comes back. As for his eye infection, its gone! Thank goodness! |
Gracie did that once and scared us to death. We rushed her to the vet. She was coughing alot, hacking. She had hair wrapped around her back tooth and it was hanging down her throat. THe vet had to to put her someout out, not totally out to get hair uncaught. It was very traumatic for us. Know whe contstantly check for hair in her mouth and keep it trimmed shorter. |
"What causes it? Who knows. Some say allergies, others say an irritation in the back of the throat or in the sinus cavity...others say exercise alone does it for their dog." Thankfully it was just irritation in the back of throat it sounds like (probably from the drainage of the infection in the eye). Glad you got a diagnosis and hope your pup feels the best soon! |
