To Pluck or Not To Pluck, that is the questions I just took Kobe to a new groomer and they had not plucked the hair out of his ears. He said it's not necessary, but all the books I've read state that it's must. Which is it? I know it must hurt a bunch, but if it's done for the well being of the dog, then it must be done, right. I'm thinking this groomer doesn't know much about Yorkies. |
Not all of them need it, I have 4 and none of them need it thankfully. |
When I had Pixie at the ER vet last month the tech mentioned she had some hair in her ears, when the vet came in she said she wouldn't pluck it, since it hurts, since it wasn't a problem for her. |
Non-plucker here------I bathe weekly and use ear cleaner before each bath with no issues. |
We bath Kobe every week, but whenever we try and put the ear cleaner in his ear you would think we were trying to kill him! :eyetearss |
I meant "bathe". Quote:

I have had my Yorkies ear hair "pulled". It's suppossed to prevent ear infections but I have not had it plucked in a while and no infections, so I might or might not pluck in the future. I know that if there is a lot of hair you should pluck because it holds in moisture, which is not good...:p |

He had an ear infection when I first got him and trust me---wrestling once a week w/ear cleaner is way better than wrestling once a day with cleaner + twicw a day with ear meds. |

We took Avery to the groomer to have her nails trimmed on saturday-and she pulled out the hair in her ears(with her fingers). There wasn't a whole lot-but enough. We do not want ear infections.. so might as well!! Also Avery didn't really mind it that much-so it didnt hurt her or anything. (we held her the whole time) |
I've pulled out Tobey's ear hair before with my fingers, i don't get it all but some of it and it never seems to hurt him really- i think he just gets annoyed. but he never yelps even if i get a good 15 hairs pulled at a time, they come out much easier than humans hairs- just make sure to get the ones down in the canal. |
I think it depends on how much hair they have in their ears. Sadie doesn't have a silky thick coat and doesn't get alot of hair in her ears..Although I do keep and eye on them and if they need it I do it. Lillie, on the other hand, has alot of coat and is thicker..she does get too much hair in her ears. She doesn't like having it pulled out (which I can't say that I blame her) but, when I give her her bath I use a wash cloth(this way I don't get water in her ears) and wet the hair in her ears, then I use eyebrows tweezers and pull out the hair...she does cry a little so I only do a little at each bath time. I think having the hair wet makes it easier to pull the hair out. |
I don't pluck them, i do cut a bit of it away if there is too much and use an ear cleaner but remember that the little hairs are the first barrier for infection. |
