Teeth Cleaning Procedure, help! Chikis, my Chihuahua is having his teeth cleaned on Tuesday, but I'm sooooo afraid. My MIL had a dog that died while having his teeth cleaned, so when I told my DH about Chikis getting his teeth cleaned he told me that he doesn't want anything to happen to Chikis. That made me think about twice, so now I'm confused. I love my babies so much and just to think that something could happen to him I would never forgive me for that. This would be Chikis first dental cleaning. He is 5 years old. I know the vet is going to do blood work before the cleaning. Is the dental cleaning procedure pretty safe? I'm freaking out and want to call the vet tomorrow to ask all kinds of questions. What should I ask her? |
I know how u feel Hi my Zeta had his teeth cleaned last month he is 2 years old I was so worried for him.but I had a great converstion with his vet and he put my mind at ease.... your baby will do just great I'm sure :D |
I know how you feel. Ellie had to have a dental and teeth pulled in January. I was horrified. Everything turned out perfect though.:) With Ellie, we had to weigh the benefits of getting it done against the risks. If she would have just had some tartar buildup, I would have rather just brushed her teeth and/or used Petzlife Oral Gel. It didn't work that way in our case though. The infection from tartar buildup was so bad that she lost a tooth and others started wiggling. I didn't know that you should brush a dog's teeth before this. If we would've let it go, the infection from her mouth could have spread to her heart and kidneys causing big problems. The vet said that the spreading infection was more of a risk than anesthesia. Maybe you could get the dental done once and start brushing from now on to try to avoid future dentals. That is what we are doing. I'm not sure it will work though. What kind of anesthesia does your vet use? It should be isoflourine or sevoflourine. Will they have an IV catheter in your dog? They should. I had seen a study recently that said dogs with healthy teeth live 3-5 years longer than dogs with not so healthy teeth.:) |
Lex has a dental when he was neutered and all went well. I think it's best to have the blood work done before the procedure. A good thing to do is use the petzlife or brush after that initial cleaning is done for maintenance and then you won't ever have to worry about the cleaning again. |

Keeping Those Tiny Teeth Clean! Can anyone tell me the best way to brush my baby's teeth. She squirms and pulls away so much & I don't want to hurt her. Also, is there a secret to getting the OraVet Plaque Prevention Gel on the gumline without getting the majority of it on her hair? I have really become diligent about her teeth since she had to have 5 removed last month -- I felt so horrible!: |
cody is a pain when it comes to brushing his teeth. I bought a human toothbrush (works great) and dog toothpaste. I have to wrap him in a towel and then scruff him 'cause he wiggles so much! little PIA! the scruffing also helps to pull some of his hair away from his mouth but it still gets in the hair. |
Great idea!!! What is "scruffing"? I'm not familiar with that term. |
scruffing is when you grab the skin at the back of his neck like his mother would do when moving them. |
I took my Chikis to vet earlier this morning. I won't pick him up until 4 p.m., but they are going to call me after surgery. He is not michrochip so the are going to do that while he is under. I'm so nervous, Chikis and Jerome are my life. Everthing is going to be ok. I know everything is going to be ok. |
Kgeremia, I just hold Ellie on her back on my lap. I hold her head and her mouth open with my left hand and brush with my right. I force her mouth open with the brush or my finger. I do the same with the OraVet, but I seldom use the applicator. I prefer my finger. Maybe Ellie is just more cooperative than some. |
