Max has started eating his own poop! My 5 month old Max tries to eat his own poop. This is despite eating his meals 2-3 times a day. I try to make sure I clean up immediately after he poops but sometimes he gets to eat before I know. What are the reasons for this? When I asked my vet all he said is "don't let him do that" His diet is only dry kibbles (Iams puppy food) and occasionally nutrical if he does not eat well. Today I bought "Deter" from Petsmart which are tablets for Coprophagia treatment. Has anyone used this medication and is it safe for puppies. I am new dog owner and very inexperienced in these matters. We got max when he was 3 months old and he has been with us only 6 weeks. What is the best way from preventing him from eating his own poop? |
Many young dogs do this. Keep it cleaned up as best you can. Fortunately most of them outgrow it. |

Let's see Teddy started eating his poop when he was about 5 months old. He is now 11 months and will only eat it in the morning if he hasn't had any breakfast. So, I make sure he eats in the morning, and then he do not have a poopy eater for the rest of the day. However, I tried many different things, not the deter that you suggested, but I tried giving him a little pineapple before he would eat. Supposedly after he poops out the pineapple and his dog food, the poop emits a smell that is supposed to be disgusting, and this would obviously deter him from eating it. It worked for Teddy as well. So on days when his poop eating is reallly bad, I will give him some pineapple. But as a rule, he only tries to eat his poop when he is hungry. It's sad, however, that i can discuss this so freely. My grandmother to this day cannot understand why he does this. It's so funny. |

Fortunatly most dogs grow out of it but there are several reasons why they do it, 1. It can be dietry, I would take him off the iams as it really is not a very good food. Look here for better ones, http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/. You may want to try a grain free one such as orijen because as dogs do not fully digest grains they make the poop smell like food. Dogs don't need grains anyway, they are just a filler. 2. It could also be behaivoural, have you ever told him off or scolded him for pooping where he shoulden't? Sometimes they eat it in an attempt to hide the evidence of them going. 3. Sometimes they just do it because they like the taste, try feeding him pineapple as this may deter him by making the poop taste bad. |
Wylie did this when he was young. We bought Solid Gold's S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop) and it worked like a charm. We used it about a month, and he's never eaten poo since. |
Don't feed ilam Hey singingcaptain , Please feed your dog with blue bufflo or Wellness as Yorkies dont' eat much 1 bag of 30 lbs can feed them for 3-6 months which only cost about $35. Ilam is not healthy for your dog. |
Out of my 5, only Sammie did the poop thing. I just tried to keep it picked up and she finally outgrew it. Hang in there...:D |
Freyja still eating poop We are getting frustrated. Freyja is over 1 1/2 and she still will play with her poop. This evening I came home to little bits scattered all over the the carpet. I have been giving her SEP but she will still play with her poop. What to do? |
A TV show I saw recently said to put a tablespoon of pineapple (from a can)in the food. . Apparently pineapple tastes terrible when eaten in poop. I have not tried it though. Max is doing it lesser and lesser. In fact he poops outside on his morning walks and that is a relief. |

I want everyone to know, that about 5 days ago, I had this same problem, did a search on here, and read about the pineapple. CoCo LOVES it, I give her a few tiny pieces every evening now, and she has a sensitive tummy, but no upchuck from the pineapple, and no more poop eating!! So thank you YT's!!! |
my dog eats poop My dog is 3 1/2 he still eats poop. It's a tastey treat to him! The only thing I can suggest is to be out there with the pooper scooper as soon as they go. He even will eat rabbit poop. I scold him, but he still tries to eat it when I'm not looking. Good luck |
My 10 week old puppy (also named Max) just started eating his poop. I did a search on here, found several folks suggesting pineapple. I like to go natural if possible so I tried it. Max hasn't touched his poop since. I bought the chunk canned stuff and give him one chunk in the morning and one chunk in the evening (if I remember). I was a little worried about the citrus hurting his tummy but he hasn't skipped a beat. |
