Leg/Hip Problem? I have a three year old Yorkie, Stanley, whom I adore. He is now occasionally holding up his left hind leg. Also not jumping up and down off bed etc. as usual. I've seen this only a few times in the past week but know they are prone to sometype of problem in the leg or hip. What should I be watching for? I've looked & felt the hip/leg area and inspected the foot etc. & found nothing out of sorts. Thanks. |
This could be luxating patella. He also could have injured his hip or knee. Best to have him checked out by the vet. |
Yep best to take him to the vets to get it checked out. Fingers crossed its nothing serious x |

I think I posted my reply in the wrong place. It was grade 2 and the surgury is tuesday. I'm feeling bad about taking him in as I had a cat pass away once during surgury. My vet in Austin is a specialist (exotics, lions, tigers, etc.) Several docters at the practice but one does most patellas. Estimate $650-$950 depending on what they find. I think I might as well plan on the $950. Hope he gives me a break before the other leg goes. He is a wonderful yorkie whom my family gave me when he was 4 month. He is my baby. |
Vet's are BS Vet's are bulls**t. Everytime i bring my yorkie or dog to them, they can't tell me anything besides asking me to pay 300 bucks for an X-Ray to check for bone/hip problems. Everytime i feel my pet is getting sick, i bring them to different vets and ask does my pet has any issues they would say he looks okay, but if you want to be certain, we need X-Rays. Indeed, X-Ray is 300 bucks, BS. |
Maybe you'd have better luck if you stay with one Vet. I've never been told my pets need an xray. He could tell from feeling the knee that it's dislocated. Find a Vet you trust & stay with him (or her). |

Hallee stopped jumping up on the couch and then started limping. Regular vet thought it was luxating patela. We did not want our vet to do the surgery because he was not a licensed ortho pet surgeon. We went to licensed ortho pet specialist who specialized with small dogs. Hallee did not have luxating patella, her ACL was torn. The specialist said luxating patella and torn ACL have common symptoms. If we had our regular vet do the surgery, he would probably would not have been able to do the ACL. So glad we went with our gut and took her to specialist. There they did these surgeries on a weekly basis. She had surgery 4 weeks ago and is recovering just fine. Not jumping up on the couch again just yet. Normal healing time is 6-8 weeks. We were very confident in the specialist. I was worried about putting her out, but since they were very reassuring because they did this as a routine surgery on small dogs. Good luck and keep us posted. We paid $833.00 for the surgery. |
Stanley did have his surgery aug 28, & is doing fine. He was "softly" whimpering when I picked him up the day after the surgery & I thought he was in pain, but they told me he was excited to see me & that was the way to show it. They sent him home with 5 five pain medication syringes (no needles) but I only gave him four as he didn't seem to need them after the third day home. It was given orally once a day. He was "sickly" "weak" two days then was back to "bossing" the cat etc. etc. The stitches are to stay in 10-14 days & he gets his out on the 14th day. He has to wear a "collar" & confined strickly the first five days except for leased backyard trips. Now when I'm home I let him out to sit on my lap etc. but no jumping or running. I have the sofa blocked & all chairs turned backwards. It is tough the first three days but then you'll know you did the right thing. Hope this helps someone needing to go thru this. |

patella surgery I want to follow up & let you know Stan is doing great. He's had his last follow up & other than keeping the jumping & running to a minimum till October's over, he is back to normal. Is was bad for a couple of weeks keeping him contained but really went fast. Rather than keep him caged after the first two weeks I gated him into the bedroom where he liked to hang out anyway and I put my mattress on the floor and turned chairs around etc. so he had nowhere to jump. He did fine. Thanks to all of you. I get a real kick out of your videos etc. |
