Am I a bad mother for not letting Ellie have...? Am I a bad mother? I won't let Ellie chew on ANYTHING animal based. That includes all bones, rawhides, greenies, bully sticks, femurs... I used to let her but there are so many recalls now and a lot of things seem to be contaminated with Salmonella. I also heard of one factory possibly dipping their products in bleach. I was going to let her have bully sticks but then I found out what they are. She would be aloud to chew on rubber bones but she doesn't like them. I should probably mention that her teeth get brushed and they are fine without chewing. I know I am being over protective...Right? Be honest with me.:) Oh, her favorites used to be something similar to the greenie and the chicken spot rawhide bones. She probably shouldn't have either, sooo maybe she won't like anything else.;) |
Freeze carrots and let her chew on those. I don't think your a bad mom for being very careful. |
That is a good idea. She does eat raw carrots but I will freeze some.:) |
Hmmmm...not quite sure what to say. I'm the opposite. The more raw meat he gets the better. Everything plastic is way out of reach. Why is it animal products that you're avoiding? You know the pet food recall was based on bad wheat right? Yorkies are dogs, and dogs are carnivores - totally different digestion system than us. They NEED meat. And raw bones are a great source of calcium for them. Rawhide isn't good for their digestion, but bullies are great - even though it sounds gross what they're made of. :p I understand your concern about pet food - it scared me too and now I home cook for my yorkie. Well, maybe home 'cook' is the wrong word - he eats raw meat. I know it's not for everyone, but I've gotten used to it and he loves it. All the treats I give him are holistic or organic and made from pure ingredients with no preservatives. It's not hard to find healthy choices if you know what to look for. |
Just wanted to add that I also agree carrots are a great snack! |
I think the major problem I have with animal products is that humans don't chew on bones so those bones that animals get are not human grade. There are salmonella recalls on this kind of stuff all the time. Ellie eats meat, but it is human quality. She would be allowed to eat food with crushed bone (a high quality kibble) if the meat is human quality. There is no way I would ever give her raw meat, so I won't give her bones from home that aren't cooked. I would give her bones that are cooked but they splinter, so that is obviously a bad idea. As for calcium, Ellie will be getting egg shells crushed for calcium when I get a grinder, but the eggs are human grade and I think people can eat egg shell. (EW).:) |
Sounds like you're taking good care of her nutritional needs, so I'd say go ahead and feed her whatever treats you feel comfortable with. :) |
I really don't want to be stubborn here (for once:) ) and I want the best for Ellie (but not raw:p ). I guess the frozen carrot is the perfect solution for us. |

Ellie May, you should only feed what you are comfortable with however don't forget that she is a canine, not a human ;) |
I'd say your just being a good mom. |

I don't let my babies chew on any of those things. They have a nyla bone...not the edible bones. |
Miss Ellie doesn't like Nyla Bones. |
Another Yt Member sells Pixie sticks, yes they are made with the same thing as bully sticks but without that stinky smell...Here is the link http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90273 They are a great, healthy snack for your little and they are from a fellow YT member... Good luck on whatever you decide :p |
I give Conner Pixie Stix and Flossies. They need to chew sometimes, and if it doesn't come from a chewie, it will be the furniture and window sills (that was Conner). |
