transition to new food today I bought canidae kibble and was previously feeding royal canin with some cottage cheese and some times chicken liver or beef....I added the homefoods because he seemed to really dislike RC, but came to me on it...moistening it only helped a bit. I felt canisae looked healthier and took a chance he would like it. I gave him a taste...he loves it. I gave him a meal of it and he ate it up like there was not tomorrow....he ate it dry....I couldnt believe it!...he is such a light and picky eater. Question.....do i have to transition him so as not to upset his tummy and bowels?? If I have to , I am afraid he will skip over the other food and jsut eat this new kibble. |
Transition is "supposed" to be slow. I start with 1/4 new, and 3/4 old. After a few days, and no tummy upset, I go to 1/2 and 1/2..then keep going from there. Mine did the same thing with RC, ate around it. And I thought they loved RC, but I knew Canidae was better for them. Thats why I switched. They shocked me when I saw them both eating around the RC! |
Yes, you are supposed to switch gradually. However, with both my girls when I first got them - they went on a different food immediately without any transition and they did just fine without any tummy upset. I find as they have gotten older that new things will upset their tummies now that didn't when they were younger. Each pup is different so you never know. |
Thank you for these comments....I feel a bit better knowing he will probably be fine. One thing that I did not mention....the store owner who has a yorkie ....and only sells the higher rated foods....does not sell RC, said to switch around high quality brands about every 3-6 months to obtain all the positives and to avoid a picky eater.....what do you think. I know I did it with my children...but this is different..hmmm? |
