My Experience with Honest Kitchen I got Lillian the trial size of Honest Kitchen's Embark. I decided that since she has been here a week and has been eating normally (she's a little pig:p ) I would begin to switch her over. Well...I dunno if I did it right or if I was just expecting something different..but it looked like green mush. I thought it would rehydrate (I did 1/2 cup of food with 3/4 cup of warm water) to look like a chunky soup minus the broth..or heck even oatmeal..but it was more like slop with ONE banana or potato chunk. :( She's currently on Pedigree wet food (1 tablespoon for breakfast and dinner) , so i just drizzled some on top. Can someone tell me if I did something wrong here...I mean I really was excited about this food and maybe I just didn't do it right. Also could anyone recommend another high quality wet puppy food???? |
Oh yes there are lots of better food than Pedigree. As far as the Honest Kitchen, yes it is like oat meal. I tried this food too, I did 1/4 H.K. and 1/4 cup of water. I add some boiled lean ground beef and they got 1/2 of this mix for the AM and the other 1/2 for PM. In other words...1/8 in the AM and 1/8 in the PM My two are 5 and 7 lbs - so if I remember correctly, 1/4 cup each was the right amount for them. Hope that helps :confused: |

My girls also eat The Honest Kitchen Force and Embark. The consistency is mushy. I have found that if I rehydrate about 2 cups at a time, scoop out what is their portion and refrigerate the rest that in subsequent feedings it is a little firmer. Remember this is a raw food that is dehydrated and pulverized, so it isn't supposed to be firm and crunchy or have chunks of fruit/meat/veggies in it. Occasionally you will find a larger piece of something in it. The color of both the Embark and Force is green when you mix it. I don't add anything to ours as it is nutritionally sound as it is. My girls tends to be very picky eaters and they love this. I switched them over from home cooking (which is also not firm and crunchy). They get this for their dinner meal (about 1/4 cup each) and they get yogurt with Missing Link for breakfast along with small pieces of fruit and veggies throughout the day. They have done fabulous on this food and you can see the difference in their poop - the color, smell and consitency of it. Plus their coats look great!!!! |
i went to a holistic pet food store yesterday and saw that they sold The Honest Kitchen there. I told them i heard about it and thought about switching to it. I was told that feeding it by itself is not a good idea, and that you shouldn't feed it as a main diet because it lacks many things needed in the canine diet. Mixing things in it, like the things added here are good i suppose, but wouldn't it be easier to feed one type of food without having to add anything to it on a daily or even meal basis? You have to ask yourself why you chose this particular brand of food. Is it because its a "raw" diet or is it because you heard its a high quality food? If you chose it because its a raw diet then i think you can do so much better if your looking to raw feed. If its because you heard its a high quality food, which it is, then continue to use it and mix in some of the things that were mentioned above. |
I think she meant that she is using it in place of the pedigree. I think she also feeds Royal Canin. Leah, I'm glad she is eating so well for you. |

Where can I find Chicken Soup for Dog lovers. Pet Supermarket where I go doesn't carry it. What's the usual cost for a large bag? |
