clipping nails I have had my 14 week old for a few weeks. The first time I clipped his nails all went well. I had been massaging his paws in preparation.....and i still do that. anyway now he put up a big fuss.I managed to get the front done. Waited a few days, unable to get the hind clipped. ( actually all this is true for tooth brushing...went well, been massaging inbetween..now stubborn) . ANy special techiniques you all use out there that work....suggestions of what i could be doing wrong??? |
When clipping your yorkie, you got to be calm and stay calm. Your dog can sense your behaivor and if he feel you are shaking or afrade, he won't let you clip him. Everytime i clip my yorkie or my Pei, i grab their hands firm (not very hard, but make firm enough that he wont' let go) and start clipping. If he moves, i would give him a firm tone, if he continue to resist, then i would grab his face and give him a mean firm look into his eyes. He will get scare and won't resist as much, so everytime when i clip him, i got to be very confident. |
I wrap Bella in a towel and have my husband hold her ;) |
If you catch them half asleep then you get alot clipped before they fully wake up to even fight ya. I usually do this to start them getting used to nail trimmings, then after awhile they don't even care about me clipping their nails. Plus don't forget to follow up with a nice treat and good dog pats!!! |
I bought a set of clippers that have a guard but I'm terrified to accidentally hurt him since I've never done it before. Any tips? |
Thanks for the tips...I never even thought to give a treat after. He loves working for treats. Brushing teeth went well tonight. I havnet tried to finish his clipings yet..husband and son are out of town and I thoing they could help. :aimeeyork |

clipping nails I am terrified also, and take her to the groomer; once clipping the macaws, she started bleeding and I almost had a heart attack. We always keep that powder, (can't recall the name), that stops the bleeding. Not easy with a parrot that is larger than the yorkie. |
