Paw licking intervention
 

I know that paw licking is related to allergies and we are off prednisone. Latte has good food that has no wheat, corn, poultry, but I sometimes put a bit of beef on top. Do I need to eliminate that also to counteact the paw licking? Does anyone have anything to put on the paws to make her feel better? I use 1% hydrocotisone on the unreachable spots. Has anyone tried that? I don't think she should be licking it. Does anyone think that low dose prednisone is ever ok?:D I'm thinking of buying her some veggie burgers to put on top. What do you think, gals?

Layla had been chewing her paws for the past few days. i gave her childrens's liquid dye free benadryl.... cleared it right up... i'd be nervous to put something topical on it in case she ate it... you might try infant socks for during the night when you can't watch her... i think it is important to keep them dry or you might end up with a yeast infection in there... when Layla woudl chew on them till they were wet i'd blow dry them. Good luck.. poor thing!!

Great idea! how much do you give her?

it is 1ml per 5lbs.. Layla is about 5.5 so i give her 1 ml.. i got an eye dropper from the drug store and it just happend to have 1ml on it. i think it is about 1/4 tsp. i gave it to her every 6-8 hours. it really knocked her out the first few days... but now it just makes her a bit tired!

Otis was paw licking and the vet put him on hydroxyzine 10mg twice daily. She said he has hay fever/allergies. It's an antihistamine that has to build up in their system before it begins to help. He's doing much better, in fact, I've only been giving it to him once daily for about a week. I sure hope she gets better. I'm sure you have, but if she's a puppy, have you ruled out mange? Good luck. It's so hard when you know somethings bothering them and mommy can't make it better!!!! Hang in there. Let us know how she does.:)

Latte is 5. We've been round and round with the allergy vs allergy thing. That's what the vet says. I have another post to some local yorkie talkers to ask about their vets, etc. I am going to try the Benadryl. She doesn't lick constantly, but I'm pretty sure it's a food allergy.

i live in southern california too and my yorkie has severe allergies - where do you live? We go to a dermatologist in marina del rey - animal dermatology.

good idea about the blow drying. You could wrap them in gauze that is air breathable as i tried the socks and they pull them off. I bought the doggie ones :). Someone told me about the gauze and i will try that next but dee dee mostly goes for the elbows, belly and neck.

Does the food she eats have any soy, chicken, wheat, corn as this could be it as if just front paws could be food allergy.

no beef as dogs can be allergic to that as well so try eliminating that and nothing else but dog food to rule out food allergy as sounds like that. Dee Dee had hamburger and her eye swelled shut she got so itchy i had to take her in for a dexamothesone shot, oatmeal soak and she was on a sedative as she was so severe itchy. The paw pads pick up things and then they lick it and ingest making it more itchy. What type of floor cleaners are you using?

no veggie burger now i would stick to just her normal dog food. Do not put anything on paws she could lick off - the only thing safe is raw coconut oil as if they lick it then it is good for them as is 50 times vitamin e. Neosporine is good for other areas where they cannot lick as it has petroleum in it which is not good for them.

It was interesting to read how different foods produce allergies in different parts of the body. I guess Stormy has food allergies, because she itches on her chest. Time to try some new food for her.

I guess Latte's are environmenal-she licks and chews all her paws. I tried the benadryl last night and was very happy. I think we both slept better. She's not licking this morning.

We live in the high desert in Victorville. We don't have as many options as you do "down the hill". Thanks, though!! I love having someone to talk with about doggie issues. My hubby gets a little bored. :D

if the benedryl works that is great news as many dogs do not respond to antihistamines such as my baby

Allergies can sometime come from problems in the gut called leaky gut syndrome so if you get the gut healthy then allergies are less. I put dee dee on probiotics dds plus from lassens health food and you can have whole foods order it too if they do not carry it . You give one capsule 30 min before food ( dd is 6lbs) then after food or on food i give dd raw organic coconut oil from this company as coconut oil has 50's the vitamin e capsule and it is natural food. Also, I do 1/4 tsp of hemp oil as hemp seed is the best omega 3-6 ratio and it acts as an anti-inflammatory which is better than fish oil as when they get inflammed they get itchier hence the red skin. The best one is Nutiva. Dogs with skin probs need vitamin e and omega 3 and 6. I hope this helps as dd is doing much better since i put her on this - next i will juice zuccini and celery and do a home cooked diet as that is suppose to help since so many preservatives etc in dog foods also you can do one ingredient at a time with them to see if they have a reaction.

Also , i recommend bile acid test - pre and post as dd has mvd which is a liver issue and if the liver is not cleansing properly then they can have itchy skin

Steroid Lotions
 

try to stay away from steroid lotions as they thin out skin - if you are going to use a lotion such as on belly use resiprox by virbac as i have tried every shampoo and lotion and that was recommended by vet as it does not have steroids in it and it actually works well. Just cannot put on place where they lick.

Also blow dry area they lick so do not get fungus and once dry maybe wrap in breathable sticky gauze so do not cause sores.

Keeping a tshirt on them keeps off environmental allergents as well and that has helped dd a lot - unless they are allergic to cotton.
