Whelping question??? How many days/weeks before whelping do dogs begin to leak milk?? I am always checking Joy and today I noticed milk coming out of her teats. I have been searching online but haven't found anything. I have a puppy count x-ray appointment for her on Monday. I really want to know how many puppies she is going to have so that I won't be up waiting for more than she has lol. I also want to make sure they are not too big for her pelvic bone. |
I just want to ask I know there are breeders out there why don't you reply?? |
milk Bitches vary, but mine average about 5 days. |
Thanks for the help. :) |
I am not a breeder, but have whelped a couple of litters of large dogs many years ago, and have been around the dog world awhile...... The puppy count x-ray is helpful, but not always 100% accurate, so you will want to stay with Joy for awhile after the "last" one is delivered. I had my whelping box in my bedroom! Puppy size and pelvic size is important, and if her labor goes on too long and seems to be very hard, you will need to take her to the vet. Waaaaaay back in the 60s, on our first night in our new town in Georgia, a car in traveling in front of us hit a beagle and just drove right on. We stopped and carefully put the crying dog on my husbands suit coat and carried her to the car and found a vet. She had a broken pelvis. She was obviously pretty old and had only a few teeth. Tried to find the owner. No luck. So we took her in and named her Daisy. And within about 4 weeks, we realized she was PREGNANT! When it came time for her delivery, she labored too hard because of the way the pelvis healed, and I went next door to our new neighbors for help......He was a USDA vet and they were having a dinner party for another vet and his wife. The visiting wife was a delivery room nurse at the local hospital. Well. They all got right up from the dinner table to examine Daisy and decided that she needed a Caesarian, so we sterilized the tops of the washer and dryer, brought in extra bright light, scrubbed up and operated in our laundry room! It was sooooo neat to take those pups out of the sacks and help them breathe their way to life! Daisy had five pups and was certainly well attended with TWO vets and an RN! All for free, too. Epilogue: When Daisy was through nursing pups and they all had nice homes, John, the vet next door, and I made an operating room out of the laundry room again and SPAYED her! |
2 Attachment(s) They were born this morning. 1 Boy and 1 Girl. They are so cute they are doing great they have a vet appointment on Monday!!! |

OMG!! How absolutely adorable they are. Good Job Adina!!! (and of course Good Job to Adina's mommy too!!) Congrats on your new additions!!! |
Yay! They seem healthy and fine so far? Congratulations Adina, does this make you a Grandma now (if you weren't already one before)? :) |
How gorgeous!!! I'm such a sucker for little babies...I cry when I watch dogs have babies on animal planet!! Were you in tears?!!! Congratulations! |
Congratulations!! ... They are sooo adorable!! Does this mean that you will be a three yorkie mom now? I would never in a million years be able to part with either of them!! ;) |
My eyes teared up just looking at those little darlings! And like Bettyeanne, I couldn't even think of parting with them...... Keep those pics coming and give Adina a gentle hug from us! |
pups Great news! They look fat and sassy already! |
are you a breeder ? your webpage doesnt work |
This is so random, but I read this post yesterday, and two days ago, someone was talking about how funny it would be if someone bred a yorkie with a greyhound. So last night i had this really weird dream that a neighbor's yorkie had puppies and they were a yorkie/greyhound mix. They looked just like a yorkie, but they had really really long legs like a giraffe and I had to go find "Sheba," which is really cat food, for these dogs to eat. Strange! |
LOL Thanks but the mommy isn't Adina but Joy. The pups are eating 24/7 so I am sure they will get huge really fast. They are big girl weighed in at 6 oz. and the boy weighed in at 5 oz. Guess since there was only 2 they had plenty of room to grow. What is the average yorkies weigh at birth and how much should they be gaining a day. I want to make sure they are eating ok. |
web site Lenore..I clicked on my name YorkieRose and it goes right to my web page. I have recently moved to south Florida and the contact info needs changing..too busy right now. |
trying to paste chart - but it seems to wrap. Ok, here's the chart, but you're gonna have to kind of put it in colums. Couldn't keep the table when pasted. I retyped the original as it was in "picutre" form, so hope I didn't make any errors. I double checked, but if those of you who already have this find any , let me know. goldcupmom: if you have that chart in an Excel spreadsheet or something similar, I could make it available as a download somewhere. |
I typed it into a table in word. Would that work? I could email it to you. |
Sure, that would work. I'll PM you. |
Hey guys, is this table up? I'm looking to get a show silky this summer (co-owned - hopefully also for agility!) am interested to see this! |
