People food diet Hello all! I'm new to the forums and new to the happiness of pet ownership! My fiance (coming over from Europe in a few weeks) has a 9 month y/o Yorkie whom she's been feeding only people food -- eg. chicken. I'm not sure exactly what else she's been feeding her, but I know it's only people food. Is this OK? Or, is she potentially malnutritioning her? If this is a problem, I want to make sure that when they get here, we can get her on the proper diet. Any advise for a newbie would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your comments. - Willy |
Welcome to YT! There are many members that have switched to homecooking for their yorkies-I am one of us! I'm pretty new to this, but it's working well for my yorkies, and I've found it's easy, cheap, and fast. I use a book called Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats as my guide, as do several other members. Check this out for some good, balanced recipes that you might cook for your fiance's dog. Please remember with any homecooked diet, that you need to supplement for optimal health. The book walks you through this, and it's really easy to find the ingredients you need for the homemade supplement at natural food stores. I got enough for probably about 6 months all at once, and I think it cost me about $30-a bargain, in my opinion! You might try searching "homecooking" or "Pitcairn" for more info. If you have specific questions, please respond and ask, we're all happy to help! |
