For all of you with babies with IBD.... OK…this one is for everyone who has a baby with IBD. My Sadie has it, too. It’s never been called that (just chronic colitis) but after my research, I do realize it’s the same. She’s on Hill’s Prescription W/D. She absolutely loves it. She hasn’t had any major episodes since she started it. There have been a couple of times that I’ve had to get some meds for her to prevent an episode but overall it’s been good. My question is this: For anyone with a baby with IBD, what kind of food/treats do you give them? Like I said, she’s on the W/D, and I feed her the canned for her meals & had a sample of the dry kibble for her treats. But I’m almost out of my sample. I was going to just buy some, but the smallest amount in the kibble you can buy is a 10lb bag. I don’t need that much for treats!!! But we are doing a training class right now, so she’s getting lots of treats. So I was just wondering what kind of treats and/or food you give your babies….If I need to order something from somewhere, that’s fine, but I didn’t know what to get. Thanks! |
Mine are all on WD as well... I have the hard kibble for the bigger ones and for Hope, I add water and warm it up, makes it soft and she can chew it better, that is what she eats at meal time.... She doesnt really like the canned... good luck! d |

thanks! this post was interesting to me. i think i'm going to start keeping a log of edgar's "habits." sometimes he has runny/mucousy type poo, and sometimes he's normal. it can't be his diet i don't think b/c i'm pretty consistent. i dO know tho, when i go on vacation he can become "irregular." great post. and thanks :) |

As for her medical issues, we could go on for a couple of months with nice fine poops & then have a couple of days of runny/mucousy poops, & then nothing but blood. The last time I had all blood, I had just come home from church one Sunday. I keep her in the bathroom when I'm not home & when I got there, it looked like a crime scene...blood everywhere. It looks like someone had been stabbed. So the vet says it's colitis, usually give her a medication to help get her back on track & we've changed her food. The W/D is a high fiber food that is supposed to help. |

I knew as soon as he woke up that he was going to have an 'episode'. From the breeder he was on Eukanuba. One week of having TJ (4 months old and 1.8 lbs) he started to have diarrhea, with a little mucus and a little drop of blood here and there. Going into week 3 and for the next approx. 8 months, TJ would have horrible episodes. After 3 weeks of having him and finding YT for advice, I changed his food to Innova, but the Innova seemed to be too rich - very stinky poops. So that only lasted 1 bag long. The episodes that TJ would have would be at least every 3 days. When he woke up, I could hear those noises coming from his little body. He would just sit there in his bed. No food and No water, just sitting there sick. I think I started to try boiled chicken and white rice now, he would eat a piece and then 5 minutes later he would poop it out whole Literally, the food went right through him, it was bizarre. But that only happened a couple of times, b/c for the most part during the episodes he didn't eat. Anyway, sometimes, only 1 hour would go by (other times 10 hours) and he would poop a normal 1 inch poop and then just pure orange/yellow mucus - globs of it. Once he got this out, he was a new man, he would run to eat and drink and everything was just fine. Of course I was at the Vet at least 2-3 times a week. They would give him a shot, we did the flagyl (2x) - but nothing really stopped it. The Vet said, he might have a food allergy, he might be eating things from around the house that is upsetting him, or there is an intestinal problem. Well, TJ was certainly eating things from around the house. #1 poop, which could have been causing the episodes, #2 he would chew on the wood mouldings and the wood doors, pretty much anything he could put in his mouth, he did. I tried to 'puppy' proof as much as I could, but I just couldn't stop the poop eating completely. So, than we tried a restricted diet from the Vet. I chose IVD - Duck and Potato, and that was the ONLY thing he ate. We went through 2 BIG bags of this food. The episodes didn't really get better, they happened less, but now he was starting to vomit really, really bad too! I am not thrilled at all with Vet food. I didn't want to feed my dogs anything with corn and def. nothing with By-products. So I stopped the IVD and bought Natural Balance Duck and Potato. But like I said the episodes were not stopping. So, now the Vet did a blood test. Everything was good, except his folate levels were really really high. They told me he has some form of IBD - an over growth of bacteria some where in his intestines. The Vet said lets try Tylan Powder, it may or may not work. I had to give TJ a very tiny pinch of the Tylan Powder everyday in a small 'meat ball' of wet food so I knew he ate it. Well, what a miracle the Tylan Powder was. Weeks started to just roll by and the episodes got less and less and less. So, I started to wean TJ off the Tylan. I went to every other day for the next month. Then every 3 days and so on, month by month. I got down to giving it to him every 6 day. By that time, the Vet said that I could stop, b/c the Tylan had worked. TJ was episode free! He could eat anything, no more restricted diet. The Vet did say though that TJ will always have IBD and he may have to back on the Tylan Powder, but at least we know it works. Tylan Powder is very safe, hardly no long term side effects for dogs, so even if TJ had to be on it his whole life, there's no worries. Well, sorry this was so long. I have tried to remember everything, but like I said you can do a search here on YT and you'll find my past posts of desperation and my TJ story. Do a google search for: Tylan for Dogs ********************************** Keeping a Journal is a GREAT idea! My Vet was shocked everytime I walked in with the 'run down' actually written. TJ could not tolerate any type of chew things (during his episode period) - no greenies (they did it big time) no bully sticks (these too created those horrible episodes). It wasn't until months after he was episode free until I gave another bully stick! Oldly enough, the stuff that I started to introduce back into his diet were: String Beans (raw) Romaine Lettuce (raw, but he only liked the crunchy center) Baby Spinach (raw) ...bizzare I know, but he liked it and it didn't bother him at all! Anyway, I am here if anyone needs to chat about IBD ;) |

During his episode time, since he was only eating Natural Balance Duck and Potato kibble and can, they also had a 'cookie' type of treat that was Duck and Potato, so that all he got....very sad...:( Also, IVD made a treat that was for sensitive stomaches, I can't remember the name but I used to buy it online...I think at www.petrx.com ...not sure though... BUT now he can eat ANYTHING I give him and has NO PROBLEMS. Currently they are on a Raw Frozen Diet ;) |

I don't have a dog with IBD, but I myself have Crohn's Disease which is one of the IBDs. Just thought I would throw in a suggestion that has worked for me. I see a dietician, and she helps me find the "trigger" foods that might cause problems. Sometimes it's not one specific food, but it is a combination of foods. (i.e., the combination of two or more foods can cause a problem, whereas each food separately will not). Also, keep in mind that there are times when a certain food might cause problems.....other times, that food will not cause a problem. It's a pain!!! When I am having problems, I've been told to keep a food diary. Write down the time foods are eaten, about how much, and whether there was any kind of problem caused by that food. I've found that keeping a food diary during my bad times works really well! |
I may start keeping a journal as well - the problem is that sometimes he has his "issues" without any change whatsoever to his diet...so frustrating! |
