Yorkie Puppy Poop - Is this much normal? My 8 week old Yorkie seems to have some problems and I am not sure if this is normal. First of all, I think she was taken from her Mother too soon. I got her 2 weeks ago from a girl at work who's little boy was being too rough with her. When I first got her she seemed to be pooping all the time. I work so I would leave her in her crate (the first couple of days) and come home at lunch. She had pooped several times in crate. Then, I moved her to the laundry room during the day because the crate seemed almost cruel for 4 hours at a time. Her rectal area became very irritated and she would yelp if I would try to clean it then she became constipated. I took her to the vet and he did tests and said she had a mild case of Coccadia and put her on antibiotic (that was 7 days ago). She seemed better after a couple of days then began pooping constantly again. For example, tonight in a 3 hour period she has gone at least 12 times. It is not diarrhea but her rectal area is so swollen that she yelps every time she goes. I have tried Neosporin on it but she licks it off. I am feeding her a good quality dog food, Natural Choice. I just don't know what to do. She is so sweet but I can't quit my job to care for her all day. Is this much poop normal in a puppy? |
No that is not normal, you need to consult your vet asap. Good Luck |
Welcome to YT...and I know someone will post with much more experience in this area...if you got her a 6 weeks then she was extremely young as they say 12 weeks is the average age so she was half of that..but my Soleil is 8 weeks and doing great...thank god..maybe a trip back to the vet is in order as these little ones can go downhill so very quickly..good luck!! Pooping I really don't think that pooping that much is normal and for her to be so sore is definitely not normal. I am no expert by any means but someone else on YT may be able to help as there are quite a few experienced breeders and vet tech's here. I know when I got my little one she did not poop that much. I hope your little one feels better soon. j:) |
Thank you all for your replies. Even though my financial situation is not great I will definitely take her back to the vet tomorrow. I am worried about her and she is depending on me. I have never owned a dog this small and she seems so fragile. I posted this because people have been telling me "oh, puppies poop a lot" but I didn't think this is normal at all. Will let you know the outcome of the vet visit. |
Definitely get her to the vet. I know that $ might be tight right now, but trust me, one trip to the vet at the first sign of tummy troubles could save you several trips later on. Good luck to you, and welcome to YT! Let us know how she's doing! |
You might double check with your vet and see if they offer a puppy package. My vet does and it is wonderful, an unlimited number of visits plus all the shots and fecals for the first year, all pre-paid at a discount. This amount of pooping is not normal. It might be that the meds have not worked or the bugs returned. At that age, the immune system is not fully developed so it is harder to treat infections. Good luck and keep us posted! |
You could ask the vet if you could bring in a stool sample and they can see if the cocciida has cleaed up or not, It is a lot cheaper to do that. I know it took several rounds of medicine before Cali got rid of the cocciida. Also make sure she doesn't get dehydrated or low sugar from going so much. If you don't have any yet get some Nutrical. You will get so much helpful advice here!!! |
Sorry to hear about your problem with your new baby. Six weeks was awfully young to be taken away from her Mother. I sure hope your baby is better soon. :aimeeyork |
Gizmo goes about 10 times a day. Alot more than Duke did. I have treated him for Cocciidi also. he had Diarriha for about a week. But he never had any pain with going to the bathroom. I'd sure check with the vet. |
Wow...this forum is great! Thank you all so much for your advice! Well, after I wrote this post last night, Baby Maggie went into full gear and almost wore me out from playing so hard. This morning she had not pooped nearly as much as she did last night but her little bottom is still so irritated. The vet had indicated to me last week that he wasn't overly concerned about her as long as she is eating and playing. Yesterday was day 7 of the antibiotic. Perhaps I need to keep giving it to her. My boyfriend thinks that the reason she is pooping so much is because her bottom is irritated and she can't get it all out at once, just going little at time because it hurts her. Don't know but going home at lunch to check on her and see how she is. It is killing me to leave her during the day while at work...fortunately I work close and can run home at lunch. Wish I could take off for "puppy leave". I could hear her as I walked up to my front door when I got home from work yesterday.....live in apartment and hope neighbors don't get mad. Anyway, I'm rambling on...have a good day everyone! |
I am sorry your pup is not well :( Armani pooped a lot when he had giardia, it was not really diarhhea either just a lot of soft wet poop. |
So sorry you are having problems with your new baby, pooping that much is deff not normal, molly who is almost 16 weeks only goes 2x a day, her little bum bum must be so sore, hope your vet can give you some awnsers:) |
