Won't eat day?? Gizzy is now 17 weeks old. He has been gaining weight steadily and he's a picky eater, but usually I can get him to eat something. (cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken, beef broth, baby food chicken...and on) He refused all food yesterday, but ate about a tablespoon of Innova puppy dry last night during the night. He also hasn't pooped as much as usual, but when he does, they are normal. I have noticed nothing unusual about his behavior, except that he seems a little more laid back than usual. Gums are a healthy color of pink. We have central air conditioning, and he uses piddle pads rather than go outside. He seems to be drinking plenty of water, and peeing plenty. (Trust me :embarasse ) Shots are next week, so nothing new there. Is it normal for them to have a day or so without eating as much? Is this just a phase??? I am also planning to bathe him today. Should I put that off? Or maybe it will stimulate his appetite? |
puppies! i tell ya.. once you think you have them figured out! Layla STILL Has days where she won't eat and is just laid back most of the day.. so if you say everything else is normal, he's just having a so-so day :) i'd still give him the bath.. maybe it wil increase his appeitie :) and get ready for a sore/tired boy after those shots!!! we send hugs and kisses!! |
It happened a lot with Gracie when she was little. I finally quit catering to her. I refused to offer her anything but puppy food. When she got hungry enough, she ate. I did supplement her with a bit of nutrical a few times a day while she was on her hunger strikes. Even now she has days where she could care less about eating, unless it is ice cream! |
Whew! Thanks!! That's what my hubby told me, but I worry. LOL He's getting his fourth set of shots DHPP or ?? but without the Lepto, but we're putting the rabies off until next month. He'll also be getting another tapeworm treatment (just to be safe) and his monthly heartworm. So, yea...busy week! :) Thanks for the support. |

And yes, I think you're right that I cater to him too much. He's growing like a weed. And he is eating at night, so he WILL eat when he gets hungry enough. |
when you guys say ice cream.. you mean NORMAL ice cream? |
Uh, yeah...plain vanilla low fat. I feel stupid if that's bad. |
The more you cater to him the more picky he will be. It is normal for dogs to have days when they don't eat much. |

I have heard people mention the freeze-dried kind, but I haven't seen that locally. I need to research it. I usually don't give him more than a tablespoon of the regular though. |
The only thing about regular ice cream is that dogs are lactose intolerant so too much milk, ice cream, or other dairy products can give them diarrhea. If you are just giving a small amount sometimes as a treat, I'm sure it is fine. I've given Lacy frozen custard a couple times and she loves it! There was a couple times she had too much though and threw it up afterwards. But as long as she only gets a small amount she does fine. |

I stopped worrying about it this morning after the first couple of posters let me know it was okay, and stopped trying to convince him to eat. After not eating all day, he finally went over and ate some of the Innova puppy dry I leave out. So he's fine, and I'm just a worry wart. My Fair Lacy- Thanks for the ice cream info. I thought it was okay in very small amounts, but I am VERY glad to have that confirmed. :) |
