Is this hereditary?? Hello, I am new to this site but need help with my Yorkie, Gracie is 7 months old and as been diagnoised with unbilical hernias and now recently dry eye...also hereditary. Is this something that should be covered in a health guarantee when purchased by the breeder or just a case of bad luck? Thanks Kara:( |
problems Hernias are easily corrected at spaying time...breeder should have reduced price to cover the extra charge..but the dry eye is another type problem IMO..it is hard for the dog to live with this condition. The eyes tend to be infected more then not..so a more costly surgery is needed. Breeder should foot the entire bill IMO since puppy was born with it...in fact it should have been detected at the health screening before the sale..as well as the hernia, so you had the choice to buy or not...best wishes |
I bought Gracie when she was two months old, so none of these problems were current or known of when I bought her. Now that she has them, do I have the right to ask the breeder for her vet information to investigate? I have called three times and still have not recieved a call back!!! I know she has puppies for sale right now, and would hate for anyone to go through what I have been through. Any advice?? Thanks |
umbilical hernia When my husband and I got our first "small" dog, we got a bichon from a pet store (I know.. I know, we learned our lesson on pet stores).. anyways, we purchased the warranty on her. You would have to read how yours is worded, our pup was covered against debilitating genetic defects... in other words, if it could be fixed and she was still suitable as a pet then that's the end of it. The pet store did however cover the cost of the surgery.. which was minimal because it was our choice to have her spayed and they fixed her hernia during the spay. From what the vet told me there is what he called a "true" hernia.. meaning it is hereditary and that dog would, if breed, have the possibility of passing that on.. or there is a hernia where the mama bit the umbilical cord too close and it didn't properly heal up.. which would not be considered genetic. Either way, it needs fixed. So, I guess it would depend on the wording of your contract and how in depth the breeder goes as to if you are out of luck or if she will cover the cost. Hope this helps? IMO, she should cover the cost of the surgery.. or you should now have the purchase/refund option. |
