Greenies/Bones I've read some posts about greenies, but I'm not quite sure what they are. Are they like bones, for the dogs to chew on, or are they more like a treat?? Also, I saw some posts about rawhide bones being bad for yorkies, because they can break off and possibly choke our babies. But what about the rawhide sticks?? I have some of those and have given them to Hercules. They don't seem to break into little pieces, so I was wondering if you guys thought those would be ok. Thanks! Brandi :p |
They are little bones that are green colored and good for cleaning a dog's teeth. They come in all sorts of sizes as well. Here's their website: http://www.greenies.com/html/about/about.html |
Tatum will do anything for a Greenie! You have to try one! Get the petite size. The pet stores sell single ones for you to try out. |
Toto says "Greenies Rule"! It's her very favorite treat ... Patrick and I have to spell it in front of her ... she recognizes the word!! :) She devours one of the little toothbrushes in just over an hour! She also poops green the next day! ;) Patrick picked up the wrong size one time and she had a difficult time with it and the next day she had loose stools ... no more of those! The problem I have with the rawhide ... it gets stringy and our grandpup, Missy the Border Collie almost choked to death on a rawhide bone! My daughter-in-law [a nurse] happened to be home and it took her a while to dislodge it from her throat ... she believes if she had not been there, she would have died. If they get rawhide I would supervise very closely while they are chewing it. |
I really think that those greenies are like catnip to cats. Tish just goes nuts over them. She will take it and try to hide it so that I cannot take it away from her. I will never give Tish rawide. It is just not worth the risk. She stresses me out enough some times with worries. :) You have to try thoses greenies though. They are shaped like a tooth brush. |
My yorkie always loves the greenies and can eat one in one sitting. I also got some of the lil bits and put them in her food when she has been extra good! I also get Maggie Nylobone Bacon bones. She LOVES those. Get the smallest size. The cheapest place to get them is actually Target. $2.49 for 2 versus $3.49 at Petsmart. |
We found that the "Nutri Dent" Brand Greenies, made by Nylabone, can be found at Walmart, small size Edible Dental Brush Chews are 12 in a package. They really do a great job on keeping their teeth tartar free and breath clean smelling. They are 100% natural, quality ingredients like chlorophyll and parsley and no added salt, sugar, preservatives, plastics, artificial colors or artifical flavors. When they get down to a small piece, I get nervous and take it away, thats when I cut the rest into tiny bits and use them for a treat. They sell the bits seperately also if you want small bits size. Our girls are happy campers with their "greenies". :D :D |
Well I'll be sure to get some Greenies for Hercules! Thanks everyone. :D |
Yup, the funniest thing about Greenies is the green poopies the next day! Freaked me out the first time I saw it, I didn't think Yoda was a vegetarian! |
We are doing a time out with the Greenies. Whimsey goes crazzzzy over them. I tried to take one away the other day and she turned into a vicious pup! LOL! I wished I had stock in that company! |
Gosh, we haven't noticed any greenie poops ? Maybe only one a day makes the difference maybe  Well, at least you know he has a GO "clean green system" ! :D |
I was wondering the same thing! I bought mine at WAl-Mart too. I cut them in half because I was wondering if One would be too much seeing as how small she is. I didn't want to take away from her good nutrition in the first year! I am so glad someone brought this up, because I wasn't sure if it was safe to give it to them. She also pottys green after. |
Well I got the Greenies yesterday at Petsmart and gave one to Hercules. Let me tell ya - that is the longest amount of time that anything has been able to keep his attention! He loved it! He will definitely be getting more in his stocking for Christmas :) |
Thought I was the only one who wasn't sure what greenies were!! Of course I do live in Wales and I don't think we have them here LOL!! They sound popular though!! |
i've been seeing Greenies at the store, and thought about getting them. i have my dentistix, and some parsley treat things... they're soo tastey to them, and helps their breath. but i'll have to try some greenies. :) |
wow this thread is super old. Don't we all have a different view on greenies and raw hides now? They are BAD! Don't use them please. They are not 100% digestable and should not be given to your dog. Bully sticks are a much better alternative and even though you still need to supervise them while using, they are 100% digestable. Also look on the Greenie package, it says not to give to dogs under 5 lbs or under 6 mo of age anyway. |
Yeah I was confused! I didn't notice the dates but I was like...wait...I thought these were dangerous?!?! I use bully sticks. I would love to find some kind of treat for cleaning Emma's teeth though. Is there anything besides brushing them that can be done? I already brush her but a treat would be funner for her every once in awhile! |
they had dogs die from greenies a while back, because they did not digest well. They were have supposed to make them more digestable, I dont trust them any more personally. I would keep a close eye and make sure you get the right size and if your dog chew them quickly, they could have more problems |
oh my word, how funny. i didn't notice the date... i was googling the topics for dog bones and chewies. sorry about that. i'm glad this thread will have some closure. lol. i never tried the greenies, i've just seen them in the store. man, i can't remember the name of the treats i give.. lol. they're like little pillows with parsley stuff inside them. smokey loves them, and they smell wonderful, lol. |

Edited to say: Okay, I see now that you came back after some other people. Bully sticks are the way we go now! |
lol, yeah, i noticed that. i haven't gotten any greenie, and now, i know not to worry about getting them. lol. it's the pedigree good bites that i get, and the pedigree dentistix. smokey seems to like them just fine. |
This thread is a great example of how views change over the years; you should read some of the old diet threads, and the favorite foods everyone was recommending. Some things stay the same, but safe food/treats are constantly changing. |

It's funny to look back at our old posts and then see how we have changed our views over the years. ;) |
