How long can I wait to give the yearly vaccines? Hootie is due for her yearly checkup & vaccines this month (July). Hubby and I are moving in 2 weeks and will be strapped for cash until sometime in August. How long can I wait to give Hootie her yearly shots and yearly checkup? |
Bump!! |
Ellie went a couple YEARS without shots and was perfectly fine. The manufacturer will say every 12 months but some last for shorter periods and most last for longer. When we took Ellie to the vet to get shots after we waited a few years the vet said she could still even be covered from a few years prior. Most last for years. |
There was a thread about yearly shots, here it is http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=yearly+shots And here is another most recent thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=yearly+shots Hope it helps.. I don't get my dogs shots every year and my vet does not reccomend it. |
I think you can hold off...it's not that far away. Lots of folks vaccinate every couple of years and not annually and nothing happens. I think that the vets want to vaccinate too much especially for these small guys. |
My vet says you have a 3-month grace period. Call your vet to be sure you are comfortable. You don't want to have to repeat the whole series of shots from square one! |
My Vet. gives them every three years. |
I usually don't booster until a year after the last puppy vaccination and then don't again for 3 years There is a lot of new info from Veterinary Colleges that there has been health problems from overvaccinations, ie every year. It challenges the immune system with something they already have plenty of immunity for which is the drift of the findings. The result is increased blood disorders, ie leukemia, kidney and liver problems, addison/cushings increases, diabetes. THis is for both cats and dogs and now it is strongly suspected it is from the annual vaccination. |
They don't need yearly vaccines anymore - most are 3 years now. But, it all depends on his age etc - ie, were his last vaccines his puppy vaccines or ? |
Hootie's last vaccines were her puppy vaccines and she finished those up in July 2006. So, should I get this round of shots and then wait 3 years or should I hold off on this round and wait 3 years before getting them again? |
You'd get them this year, then go to the 3 years. I think there is a diff. vaccine for the Rabies - so you may want to make sure they have the 3yr Rabies on hand. The rest should be fine as is. |

I do have one more question......should they been seen by a vet for a checkup every year? Even if they don't get their vaccines? Or just skip the vet all together if they are acting like themselves? |

If all they do is check heart beat/rate, temp, body palpitation, heart worm test, ears etc. - they should do all of those anyway at every appt. (except heart worm). |
