a question about teeth Ok so i brush Layla's teeth everynight but there are still places i can't get into with the toothbrush.. so those of you that do daily/weekly brushing.. do you still take your pups to the vet yearly for a tooth brushing? maybe once every two years??? also she has this ONE k-9 tooth that is yellowish color... i scrub the heck out of it... but i just dont' know.. any suggestions? |

I also use a dental tooth scraper.....I've not had to have their teeth cleaned until about 4 years of age. It seems once you've had them cleaned you have to do it routinely. But, I also use PetzLife and give the C.E.T Chews to keep the tarter down. |
Dog toothpaste, well, most of it, is enzymatic, so the great thing about it, other than being safe for them to digest in small quantities is that it actually brushes for you. Vinnie licks it all off the brush first, which is enough to do the job it was made for, then i let him chew on the brush because it does help. My point is don't panic if your dog won't let you open up it's mouth and actively brush like a human would! Atleast this is what my vet says! |
I buy cheapish toothbrushes for Spike, put the toothpaste on them and let him chew. He also has the dental chew sticks that have the same enzyme in them. Some groomers also do teeth brushing as part of their service. There's a place here that will do it as an add-on for when they get groomed. I think they charge $4.95 extra. |

I use a battery powered doggie tooth brush so that I can get a lot more brushing done in such a short time. I also dip Q-tips in Crest mouth wash and rub on their gums after the brushing. This kills the germs that cause plaque. I'm hoping I'll never have to get their teeth cleaned. So far so good. |

I'm going to ask her more about it once things calm down for her. Jake hates a toothbrush, so I get the fingertip toothbrushes because he doesn't mind my finger in his mouth, and he chews on it while I brush. It works really well for him. I do it at night when he's sleepy and wants to cuddle, then he goes and gets a drink of water (every single time lol) and then we cuddle together and sleep. I also use Petzlife gel. |

I didn't even brush Ellie's teeth until she had to have 9 of them pulled in January. Since she has periodontal disease they have to be brushed everyday and something called OraVet has to be put on them. It is a plaque barrier. The first application of OraVet has to be put on while they are under anesthesia so their teeth can be completely dry. Ellie was going to have to have her teeth cleaned every 6 months but her vet said it doesn't look necessary right now and we can hold off. I personally wouldn't do any dentals if there isn't much built-up because of the anesthetic risk. |

What age to start teeth brushing Hey guys I have a yorkie names Skipper and he is 3 months old. He doesnt have all of his teeth yet, they are stilll growing in. I tried to brush the little bit of teeth that he did have but he was very upset and did not cooperate or like it at all. I would like to know at what age is recommended that I start to brush my yorkies teeth being as though he is three months now and doesnt really have a lot of teeth? Thanks for all of your help. |

I start introducing a finger wrapped in gauze, dapped with a bit of Vanilla Mint toothpaste as soon as the begin cutting teeth.....the sooner the better. That way they are completely comfortable having someone touching their mouth by the time they go to their forever homes. |
Just read this thread... If you're going to try mouthwash on q-tips, try the Crest Pro Health kind. It doesn't burn like Listerine or Scope does, and it tastes pretty good too! |
What about the dogs who seriouly FREAK out over teeth cleaning? (which mine do) I even have one run under the bed and wont; come out. How much of an effect will petzlife gel have if I at least get it in their mouth with no brushing on the ones who won't let me near them? |
