feeding my yorkie homemade food, he began to poop black we just started to feed him homemade recipes from this site and i started to notice black poop. is that normal? should i be concern or anything? also, with his peeing, when we first got him, he peed like a girl, like he squat and pee, and he would pee all of it. now, he lifts his leg up and pees, but he pees little at a time, at many different spots. is that normal too?? im just so worried, bc i read around that black poop and excessive peeing are signs of melena. |
Black poop is what's called "tarry" poop, which means there's blood in the stool. You might wanna take a sample to the vet. And lifting the leg and "peeing" a tiny bit is called marking. Is he nuetered yet? |
I would take a stool sample to the vet and have it checked out just to be sure. The frequent small peeing is marking. Your baby is probably staking out his territory in the yard!! |
no, he is not neutered yet, but his appointment is this thursday. should i wait for thursday or should i do it now? |

a lot of times when you switch from kibble to home cooking, their bodies are detoxing all of the bad stuff and it can come out in diarrhea or perhaps in your little guy, black poop, if he seems otherwise ok i'd say wait until your vet appoitment. good job with the home cooking :) |
Congrats on your little man starting puberty and marking his turf. The black stool could also be from iron in his diet. You mention that you feed him a homemade diet. If the diet you feed him is high in red meat it could cause the black stool as well. A few times my dogs have had black stool. I has usually been after spending the day with my parents who spoil them rotten. My mother will make steak, and hamburger for the dogs and eat pizza themselves. I would not worry too much about it but check with your vet if it persists. |
