Can ingual hernias happen twice? I just found out that my 7 week old yorkie (I don't actually have her yet) has an ingual hernia. Is this normal at such a young age, and will it happen over and over? Thanks for the help? |
Hernia Most are easily repaired at spay/neuter time...never had them cause any problems or return. The breeder should reduce the price to cover the extra cost in surgery..my vet used to charge about $50 during spay/neuter..some may charge more. |
I'm asuming that you aren't talking about the belly button hernia and you're talking about the abdomonal hernia. These can be fixed. Different vets charge different prices. If I'm not mistaken, I've heard/read that these are genetic...abdominal hernias...and that if you were planning on using her for breeding, you shouldn't cause this can be passed down. |
Inguinal hernias are easily repaired...Baby had one that was repaired during her spaying.. I recieved a $250 discount on her when I adopted her, but the surgery for spaying and hernia repair was about $250...so it all worked out. PLus, she has never had any other problems! If you have any other questions you can PM me! |
My breeder is going to cover the cost of the surgery, and the hernia will be fixed by the time I pick her up. I just wanted to make sure that these hernias are not a reoccuring thing that I would have to pay to fix several times a year. Thanks for all of the posts! |
Sammi had an inguinal hernia...They repaired it few weeks after her birth...I took her home at 14 weeks...At about 24 weeks (give or take 1 or 2) she got a treat lodged in her throat, she tried so hard to get it up (and she did) that she busted her hernia surgery and the hernia popped back out...I had it repaired again at her spaying... |
An inguinal hernia is in the groin as opposed to the umbilical (belly button) one.. It usually is NOT necessary to put a youngpuppy thru the stress of anesthesia to repair them at a YOUNG age. It can wait til altering and dentals are done at 6 months or so. No point is exposing your baby to anes more than is absolutely necessary. I do the same thing Pat does...just make sure your vet checks it every visit.. |
Thank you all so much for the help! I was also wondering if since my Chloe had a hernia at such a young age if this meant that she would be a "high maitenance" puppy. Will the hernia cause other problems? |
hernia Whispersmom and I have both had hernia's repaired..never was a future problem. I had a little girl at 3 pounds with a double repair..lived a long healthy life until Rainbow Bridge at 14 yrs. |
I just picked up my yorkie pup yesterday at the breeders and was told then that Molly had a inguinal hernia and that it should not cause problems and that it could be repaired if it didn't fix itself. I was a bit shocked at first but seeing that many yorkies have been good after surgery is a relief. thank you from a new yorkie mom May 2, 2007 |
My Sasha had a double inguinal hernia when we got her at 9 weeks. I wasn't all that surprised, I basically took her out of a breeder's home that I had a feeling wasn't taking that great of care of her and didn't know much about yorkies and probably didn't even know what it was. My vet opted to have it fixed at 10 weeks, for two reasons. She was already close to 3 lbs so she was big for her age, and hers was pretty severe. My vet was afraid by the time we got her spayed her bladder and/or intestines would be caught in it because they were pretty big. I trusted her opinion and Sasha came out fine and has not had any other health problems *knock on wood.* I was also told not to breed her because those hernias can be passed down. We weren't planning on breeding her anyways though. |
Did you know that she had an hernia? Quote:
In this case I'm the breeder and don't know exactly what to do.Have it done , or reduce the price and how much... When I ve said that everybody says she is sick.... which is not true! |

As others have pointed out, this can be repaired and shouldn't present a problem once done. Talk to your vet before hand. Until then, you will just have to carefully monitor her physical activity...nothing to crazy and no jumping on and off furniture. |
Remy had an inguinal hernia it was repaired at the time of her spay ( six months).Unfortunately the vet damaged her throat with the tube during surgery and she had some life threatening complications a day later were she almost died ,then a few days after bringing her home from the emergency clinic her hernia stitches came open so back to the vets again for more surgery....at xmas I noticed she had a bulge at the original hernia site so back to the vet again to have it looked at.At this point the vet cant tell if the abdominal wall is repaired but weak and allowing the intestines to bulge out or if the internal stitches came apart after the surgery and the hernia is open.So for us its a wait and see , both the vet and I dont want to put Remy through another surgery if we dont have to. Needless to say that vet will never see me or my dogs again ! The vet also said that with inguinal hernias dogs will often have a weakness on both sides of the abdomin. This worries me as Remy does have a weakness on the other side but the vet said it may never tear. I'm so sorry to hear that and I wish you the best for you and your baby. Maybe it was that Vet, don't come back to him anymore and warn the people, Good luck! |
