cooking for your baby vs his own dog food I'm debating whether i should feed him his own dog food, which he will not touch if there is no "flavor" or should i start cooking for him. we used to give him some of the food we eat, just the hard stuff, but lately, he wont eat any of the hard food because his baby teeth are coming out, so we chew it for him. but when we do feed him our food, his stool is really wet and he's pooping every 2 hours or so. so to all you that cook for your baby, does his/her stool wet or solid? |
I have cooked a few recipes that I got off of here to give Holly a bit of variety, but she has never had loose stool because of it. I don't know if she's had loose stool at all for that matter. I do know that I've gotten suggestions not to feed her human food by both my vet and fellow YTers. I'm not sure about the specifics though. Holly used to be a bit finicky with her food at first. So I bought some Canidae wet food and mixed a little with her kibble. She loved it and it's a really good food. Just some suggestions, hope it helps a little. Good Luck. By the way. It shouldn't really cause loose stool - is there alot of garlic or onion in what he's eating? If you can learn to home cook, it is best for your dog. Keep in mind that kibble is, LITERALLY, poor-quality human food (meat, grains, veg) that is dried, processed to death and loaded w/ preservatives. Kibble was invented during WWII (or was it WWI) to help people save money. Before that, animals ate what all animals ate (including us): REAL FOOD! LOL. |
A Short History Of Dog Food Nutrition (excerpt) Believe it or not, dog food has not always controlled an entire aisle in your local grocery store. The use of bagged and canned foods became popular in the United States after World War II. Before that, most people fed their dogs what was available including left-overs, scraps of food, and some times inexpensive cuts of meat from the local butcher - another artifact of the past. In 1860, the first processed dog food was introduced by James Spratt, of Cincinnati, Ohio who developed a biscuit made of wheat, beet root, vegetables and beef blood. The name of this new product was Spratt's Patent Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes. The idea for special food for dogs gained popularity as mill operators and slaughter houses found dog food to be a good market for their by-products. Since many of these meat sources were non-human grade, the practice became common to mix these with the grains and cook them together for many hours or days to kill bacteria and disease. I cooked for him today. i got a recipe from here i believe. it was called Burger stew. the recipe are: ground beef spinach, carrrots, garlic, kelp powder milliet i went to the and asked ppl for kelp powder and millet, they didnt know what it was so, i wasnt able to put the last two ingredients. i hope thats okie. i feed him two times this today and hopefully his stool wont be runny. |
I use the frozen vegetable mix (corn, peas, carrots, green beans, etc.). I add to that various cooked meats like pork and fish. Blended it for a few seconds (you don't want it like a paste). Then add rice. I mix it with his dog food and he goobles it up. I make weekly batch and change up often. Sometimes beef, chicken, etc. I'm looking at adding liver, heart, and tongue. |
i coook for Layla and her poop is FINALLY solid!!! she had a hard time with her anal glands whens he was on pet food... then the recalls... i just decided to home cook and i was surprised how easy it was! you need to make sure you are feeding a suppliement like Missing Link and a calcuim source like Solid Gold Bone Meal |
We're just starting to home cook! Marci has been a great help in getting us started! (Thanks again!) I bought the book by Dr. Pitcairn today, and have been researching tonight! I'm going to buy the ingredients and supplements tomorrow. I'm excited to start-and I'm sure the furgirls will be too! |
