Got a new puppy, 8 weeks; What health checks do I need to do? So we just got a new yorkie and this is our first time we EVER owned a dog. Her name is Pocky :) anyways, it's only 8 weeks old at the moment, with no shots and not dewormed yet. I went to a vet last week and she told me some pricing. 48$ checkup + vaccine = 80$ dewormer = 20$ stool analysis = 23$ All in canadian dollars. Then she started to talk really fast and I couldn't seem to ask her to slow down because she seemed to be in a rush, but I did a catch a small bit that I would have to pay every month for the dog's medication. I'm very skeptical of practices that clinics would do. Will they try to leech as much money of me as they can with medication my dog doesn't need? Hell, even paying for the stool analysis seems ludicrous. Either way, any advice is appreciated. Seeing that this is our first puppy, what are some of the things we need to do, health/medical wise? Thanks for the help. |
why do they want a monthly medication price, is she/he sick? the normal procedure i know is the breeder must give the puppy the first vaccines between 6-8 weeks before they leave the breeder and its repeated every three weeks 3 or 4 times (some do 4 sets of vaccines some do 3, i always do 3) 1st visit is with the breeder one distemper, probably a fecal, dewormer, and an exam body, ears, eyes, coat, etc.. now sometimes the breeders do it all for the customer but the puppy would not be ready to go home until 12-15 weeks of age..but then you miss out on puppy breath = ) 2nd visit is with the new owner the procedure is the same as the first 3rd visit is with the new owner the procedure is the same and then the puppy gets a rabies vaccine and you are done for the year please post pics!! |
3 Attachment(s) Well, since you asked for photos, here is it. The puppy in the photo here is like....3-4 days old. My camera broke so I haven't been able to take ANY new pics of the pup in 4 weeks of age...which really sucks because I take pictures as a hobby and I was really looking forward to photos. The mother actually belongs to my uncle, so we get to visit it whenever we want and everyone has fallen in love with Pocky (yeah, we named it after the chocolate candy sticks :P). It was only a litter of one puppy, so the pup had the milk all to herself and grew up to be very, very healthy and had all the attention. |
ohh that little face is sooo cute |
Cute puppy. Why the puppy didnt received his first shot and be dewormed when he was at the breeder's home ? Paying for stool analysis is not ludicrous . |
When they gave him to you they probably should've included a health sheet for him, like a vaccination chart. A stool is def important too! Besides, these little balls of fur are worth it. :) Good luck! |
