Taping Ears? Hello, I'm new on the forums & it's a great site for a new owner like me. I have a question about taping my puppy's ears. Bobby is 9 weeks old & both his ears are floppy. I want them to stand up but I don't want to hurt him at all. I've heard about taping ears but can someone explain it to me? Thank you! - Dee |
I think it's too soon to tape his ears. Kalina had one floppy ear and one standing ear when I got her two weeks ago. She is 3 months now and her ears are both standing. Keep the fur part-way trimmed from her ears and that might help if they are very hairy. Otherwise, I'd wait a while yet. |
Oh, thank you! I was just a bit worried! I heard from a friend that he's too young to get groomed.. is that true? |
Once a week I shave Kalina's ears just enough to get off the excess hair, (part-way as you can see in her picture). Then I bathe her with a good shampoo and conditioner and brush her. I haven't trimmed her nails yet. I wouldn't groom her professionally yet, as I don't think she needs it. What I do is enough to keep her clean and pretty. |
I worried about Tatum's ears when I first got her. My family laughed at me when I talked about taping them. I was told to just wait a little longer and sure enough, they popped right up. Keep in mind that they can go up and down while their teething. Don't know why that affects the ears, but that's what I hear. Also, a good ear trimming makes a huge difference and will take the weight off the tips giving them a good fighting chance to stand. |
Funny that you say teething & ears are relative because Bobby is teething & one ear pops up occasionally! I guess I'll wait it out! ;) - Dee |
I do think she's too young to be professionally groomed, but you might call around and see if a groomer will let you walk in and just shave the tips of the ears for you. I know we've done that where I work before. We normally just charge $5.00 for something like that, and that way the puppy doesn't have to stay all day for grooming - plus we don't like to take them until they are fully vaccinated including rabies. So if you don't feel comfortable shaving the tips yourself, call around because I'm sure there is a groomer that will do that for you. I would wait at least another month to see if they'll stand on their own before taping them. |
That's a good idea to ask a groomer to show you how to do the ears. Our breeder showed us before we took Tatum home. It's kinda hard to describe to someone but seeing it done once will definitely help. You just don't want to leave him at the groomer if he's not up to date on shots. |
I'm thinking about getting Bobby groomed once he older but I'll definitely look into getting his ear hairs trimmed. How often should I bathe him? |
Taping ears. When I got Zoey her ears were down. At about 10 weeks, they came up for only a week. Then went down for a few weeks. Then they were one up one down. Now at 17 weeks they are both up, but 1 is still floppy at the tip. I never taped them, but I did get the hair trimmed off them twice. I think they just do what they are gonna do. Good luck. |
