Milk for doggie treats?/ Waltermelon okay? I am going to try baking some puppy treats this afternoon and the recipe calls for milk...is lactose-free milk okay? I will buy regular milk if I need to, but all my husband and I drink is the lactose-free. Watermelon...we are chilling a watermelon right now...yum! Anyway, Gizmo gets really interested in anything we eat, and I know the question WILL come up...is waltermelon okay? How about the seeds? I have learned so much here, thank you! |
Watermelon is a GREAT treat -- too much can give the "squirts" so just use good ole common sense and don't feed a huge amount. I would be careful about feeding seeds.... I'm not sure about milk, I know a lot of treat recipes call for milk. I wouldn't think that a little would hurt -- we feed our dogs cheese which is a milk product. Hope this helps -- happy baking! |
I read that generally dogs are lactose intolerant and can get diarrhea from products containing lactose but some can tolerate small amounts of milk. I think that a little bit of milk can be ok but I don't use milk in any of my treats since I sell them and I don't want my customers getting sick. You would think that if you were using lactose free milk, then it would be ok for dogs but I'm really not sure I don't know anything about giving watermelon to dogs...I haven't heard any bad things yet |
not sure about the milk question, but watermelon is high on Oscar's fav food list! my daughter also feeds it to her two yorkies--they love it, too. Emmy is my picky eater--she ate it the first time I offered it to her, but now just tosses it around the kitchen. |
Thanks! LOL...watch me pick seeds out of watermelon for my puppy. My family already thinks I'm nuts over this little one. Now it's confirmed! :D |
My furbabies get watermelon all the time, just make sure no seeds. Generally, seeds are not good for dogs. As far as the milk goes, as long as your dog doesn't have allergies to dairy products, you should be fine! Some of the recipes I use to cook them their homecooked meals include milk. Plus, they get Stonyfield organic nonfat plain yogurt everyday, and sometimes nonfat cottage cheese. Mine are okay with it :) |
It should be fine. I would try and if it upsets their tummy or you get a bad reaction, then don't use it again. |
