Sarcoptic Mange :aimeeyork Hi, I am so happy I found such a wonderful site just for my breed. I am very sad right now. I purchased a Yorky on Friday. Since I bought her she scratched her ears alot. So I took her back and they said she had ear mites. :( Finally, by accident we found out she has scabbies. I hate it, I can't touch her as much as I would like to. I don't know what to do with her. I have since given her a shot of "iverectim" and I am apply Perithrin to myself. Any other tips for me? Please help.....anything! :aimeeyork |
Scabies Hi! You need to be very careful about letting the puppy get on your bed, couch etc. Scabies is highly contagious and you and your family can get infested with them. There are precautions you need to take such as laundering your bedsheets etc to keep them from getting everywhere. Do a google search on the internet and you can find lots of helpful info on how to keep them from spreading while you puppy gets treated. Good luck to you...P.S. I am a nurse and have a nurse friend who got scabies from contact with an infested patient and she had heck getting rid of them. |
Vet Have you had this confirmed with a skin scraping. Yes, you can catch it from our dogs and it is much worse on humans. My two boys came complete with sarcoptic mange and mites. After a medicated bath for them, the vet put them on Revolution, which takes care of all things, mites, mange, heartworm, fleas, and ticks. It is very inexpensive about $10 a month, you place it on the back of their necks. My boys have not had any of the above since they went on it about a year ago. |
From what I understand Sarcoptic Mange & Scabies are two different things. I hope she feels better. Did you inform the breeder about the symptoms and ask for some money back? I would definitely do that as well. My yorkie was on 3 diff types of antibiotics for the first month I had him in February because he had a form of Mange. He's as good as new now. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! So sorry to hear about your new baby, Scabies is a new one on me. What does the breeder say? The other dogs probably have it too. Oh my, what a mess. I would research on the internet but it sounds like you akready know what to do opretty much. How old is she? Poor thing. Keep us apprised so we can learn from your experience. |
oh... and i wanted to add that mange is not contagious to humans, but scabies is. |
You need to check with your vet Sorry to disgree, but sarcoptic mange is and can be transmitted to a human through close contact, believe me I know as I caught a mild infection from the dogs. It was absolutely miserable and made me understand what the dogs were going through. Sarcoptic mange is caused by a mite under the skin and like I said, humans can get it. Both the vet and the dermatologist told me this. |
There is two different forms of mange. Sarcpotic Mange, which is scabies and is contageous (sp?) to humans and dogs, and Demodectic Mange which isn't contageous . We are right now treating our bloodhound for Demodectic. I would recommend researching on the web as others have said I found a lot of info on both forms when I was looking around. Hope your pup gets better soon. |
I am sorry you are having to have a problem so soon after receiving your fur baby. Rest assured you are not alone and this problem can be fixed. I am sure your vet will help you take care of this problem. Enjoy your baby and congratulations on her adoption. What did you name her? If you'd like we ooohhhh and awwww over pictures of everyone's Yorkie, so please feel free to post some if you'd like. Keep us posted on your furbabies progress. :D |
Hi. I found this information on scabies on the Center for Disease Control website. The link is below as well if you want to check out more info on scabies. Hope it helps! :) Did my pet spread scabies to me? No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is infested with scabies, (also called mange) and they have close contact with you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation. However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated, mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms. Sarcoptes scabei Scabies Fact Sheet |
Oh, my! This brings back bad memories! :( One of our chihuahuas had sarcoptic mange. The vet diagnosed it as sarcoptic mange. He said she was born with it. This was many years ago and we didn't have the internet or a lot of information available about it. The vet had a prescription formula that I mixed with water and dipped her in it. It smelled so bad. :( She itched so much and she hated the smell as much as I did or worse. She would try to rub it off of her. On my own, I obtained sulphur powder and mixed it with vaseline and applied it to her. I would leave this on for awhile and then bathe her. This was not a fun time, but we got rid of it and this poor little dog that had bald spots on her grew the most beautiful coat of reddish-brown fur! She was never troubled again, but the treatment took months. |
