Coat Color and Weight A couple questions for YT. At what age do yorkies generally achieve their adult coat coloring? I noticed that the roots of Toby's coat are a gray/silver color so I am thinking he might be a gray/silver and gold Yorkie. On the top of his head between his ears the coloring of his hair is so light it almost looks like he's balding! :) Just wondering if the gray/silver roots are an indication of what his adult color will be or if that is normal for all puppies. Also at what age do yorkies generally achieve their full adult weight. Toby is 4 months and is probably now about 3 lbs. I was told he would probably be on the smaller side, but wasn't sure when yorkies generally top out at their adult weight. One more question, right now I'm feeding him Nature's Logic canned food, which he loves! Should I expect to change his food once he's bigger or do you guys just continue to feed your yorkies the same food as adults. I love this site and you guys have been such a help to me since Toby is my first puppy ever. It truly is an amazing experience! I can't imagine my life without him now. :) And yesterday Toby finally started walking on a leash!!! It was awesome...now that he knows he's supposed to walk not just sit on the ground while I hold the leash, he thoroughly seemed to enjoy walking around the park. Sorry if that was a lot. I'm done. |
hey and WELCOME!!! i've read it can take up to 2 years to have their full "real" coat. Layla is 15 months and still has puppy colors, black and tan... and i've read on here some dogs reaching full weight at 7 months, others it takes over a year. Layla is 5 lbs and has been for probably 5 months now. CONGRATS on the leash!!! it's a tough one!! but all the places you can go now!! may i make a food suggestion... he should really be eating dry food.. Yorkies are prone to dental problems and the dry food helps get rid of tartar which will end up builing up and you may need to get his teeth cleaned by the vet which is very expensive. You might also want to brush his teeth. Layla gets her done every day and has since she was a pup... and she still struggles  so it's not easy but it is so good for their teeth. If he is eating a puppy formula, he should be changed to an adult formula when he is 1 |
You can't tell from Adie's avatar but she has hair is really pale tan on the top of her head. She started getting silver roots when her puppy fur started growing out the the tan started growing in after the siver grew out a bit. I think she is still changing colors and she is 13 mo old now. Yorkies are like a box of chocolates .......LOL Adie has weighed 4lbs 4oz for the past 5 months. If she keeps eating the way she has been lately she'll be up to 5 in no time though. She just started being a pig after being a picky little thing. Marci, Adie eats soft food but we give her hard crunchy treats for her teeth plus she loves chewing on her toys so I'm not too worried about the soft food. I offer her dry but she refuses it. Maybe with this new piggy phase she will start eating that too.:p </IMG> |
Reeses turned very blonde/white baldy looking on top. He is 1 1/2 yrs old now and his back is a blackish silvery looking color but at his roots its a little lighter blackish silver. It has been that way for a while now so Im guessing he is full coat color but at the same time I wanna think not since his roots seem a little lighter. |

I love that, it is so true! : 1. Weight....there's a weight chart somewhere on this site...don't remember where....that seemed pretty accurate from what I've read. 2. Color...I wondered this same thing. (Gizmo is starting to look like a pre-L'Oreal commercial!) I actually got two decent pics of it yesterday. I have been told that it is normal. |
Gracie is just over a year old. She has not put on any weight for the last 5 months or so. She is going through her 3rd or 4th coat change. I think this might be her mature coat coming in. It is really light silver from the roots out about 2 inches now before her black puppy coat takes over, then there is another small stripe of silver from her last coat change. She looks like she had either a bad dye job or tried to get a punk rocker hairdo! :D I so hope it is her adult coat, I just love the silver and it is so silky, just like the gold hair on her head. |
Thanks for all the comments and advice! I actually decided to start mixing dry (California Natural) food in with his wet food. He seems to like but just likes to pick at it here and there...to help with his teeth. I guess we will have to just wait and see what his final coat color will be. It's gonna be fun watching him grow and see his colors change. :) |
I think there is a sticky about the coat colors and helps explain what type of coat they will have and probably what color it will turn. There is also a chart to help estimate the weight of your yorkie. It worked with Summer right on the dot. I don't know if she would have ever gone through another growth spurt and gained some more weight, but I doubt it. From the time I got her at 9 weeks old up until she was about 14 months old it was right on. On the other hand Abigail is a little on the larger side so it didn't work for her. The lady who made the chart uses it for her breeding program, so it doesn't necessarily go for all yorkies, but it is very close! Oh yeah its under I think general discussion. Good luck with your puppy :D |
