Canned dog food versus dry dog food Hi all! I won't be getting my yorkie baby until several weeks but I am trying to get educated on what to feed her. Right now she is getting canned dog food mainly with some dry dog food. My question is, how long to stay with the canned dog food. I have heard feeding a dog canned food as the main meal after puppyhood can lead to rotten teeth. My sister had a dog which she fed only canned dog food and she had the worst breath ever. By the time I get my puppy, she will be 12 weeks or so. What are your experiences with this? P.S. I'm sure this topic has been broached in the past but I want to be informed. Thanks! |
I've heard that can food has too many preservatives that are not as good for them. Bella only get dry food. She eats Eukanuba for small breed puppies. |
Bella eats dry food mixed with the Natural Balance Beef roll.........Her first week with us she did eat dry mixed with cottage cheese and mixed with Ceasar puppy wet food but the vet said get her off of wet food as soon as possible. I think wet food is tough on their teeth and Yorkies are known for early tooth decay |
She will probably be on dry food by week 12. I would feed her what she is being fed now for a bit. There are a lot of great foods on the market, be sure to give her puppy food. Look on the other discussions, everyone uses a lot of different stuff. You can research on the web. |
Congratulation on your new baby to be. I know you are getting excited. I did with Maggie. Maggie was the queen of picky eaters. She is now in love with her food. She eats Royal Canin 33 and Bil Jac. Both puppy food. Bil Jac puppy dry food is a soft crunch. You can actually crush in between two fingers. Maggie gets 1 tsp. of canned food mixed with a 2 TBLS of dry food in the morning. That is the only time she gets any canned. The rest of the day, it nothing but her dry food. She has gained weight in leaps and bounds. She is now 14 weeks old and weighs close to 4 pounds. I don't mind at all that she has a little meat on her. She is a picture of health. |
My baby Lacy was started on Royal Canin dry dog food. When I tried to mix her dry food with canned food she got diarreah, after that I just kept her on dry food. |
Personaly I think canned food is terrible for dogs, dry kibble is best and helps their teeth with cleaning... There are some great threads on quality dog foods. If you do a thread search for puppy food recommendations, I think their is a list in that thread. I feed my pup Natural Balance but I know some people use Innova or Canidae which are both good as well. It is so important to find the right/best food for your dog. I have been hearing that a healthy diet with quality kibble can actually extend their lives. If you read through the threads here, you will find things out about dog food that you would never believe!!! Good luck with your pup, I know how excited you are. |
Re: Dog food Thank you all for your helpful replies! That is why I am so hooked on Yorkietalk. You guys are the best! ...and yep I am counting the days until I get my "Muffin". That is what I decided to call her. |
Just to redress the balance ;) We have fed a mixture of canned and dry for over 20 years with good results, I'm not keen on purely dry diets as I am not convinced in the long term they give enough variety to the dog - imagine eating the same food for 15-20 years  |
We feed Buddy fresh meat, mixed with 'BURNS' dog food. He has stuff like steak mince, chicken, or lamb, and then we add the dry burns to it, which contain vitamins and vegtables. We change Buddy's food, though, so he doesn't get bored of he same old thing. He some times has liver and tripe (yuck, it stinks - but he loves it) and he also has 'melts'... anyone else give their baby melts??? |
Yes - the cooking tripe has to be one of the worst smells ever but they love it ! :D |
