Shots Hercules was given the distemper shot today by the vet. He's usually very active and practically bouncing off the walls. He was pretty active for a few hours after I brought him home, but then he fell asleep and has been pretty much sleeping ever since, which has been for about 8 hours. I would be ok with the sleeping part, except that when he has woken up a few times during the sleep, or we move him, he starts to whimper, which he has never done before. Do you think the excessive sleeping and whimpering is because of the shot?? I just want some re-assurance, because this is not like him at all. Thanks Brandi |
It does make some unwell and Gypsy Rose is always like this - after her 2nd shot as a pup she cried every time she moved and screamed occasionally for a few days. She was fine afterwards! Gizzie Chavi is made of sterner stuff and was ok! Hercules will be fine I'm sure. Give him a gentle hug from us! |
Thank you so much for the response, I'm soo worried over here! I'm almost in tears, because I don't want him to be hurt or in pain. And I know there isn't anything I can do. But I needed to hear from someone else that it was ok, so thanks. |
Chelsey just had this shot the other day. And when she got the needel she did not even feel it. Then the vet was saying some dog start crying after. And as soon as she said it chelsey started crying. The vet said that she may sleep for a long while after and she did when we got home... but she has been fine since. I guess they all react to the shot different. |
Ok. Well that's good that Chelsey didn't react to the shot. Hercules gave a little yell when he was given the shot. He's doing much better today though, moving around like usual and he ate his breakfast. So I feel much better. |
Oscar goes for his second shot Monday...I dread it. The breeder gave him his first one. She said not to give them the leptospira until like 6 months...anybody got any ideas about that? I was going to ask the vet when we go. |
Yup, shots affect them a lot, up to 2 days usually from my experience. If he's not better after a few days, I'd take him to the vet. Just make sure they do eat everyday if you can. |
the first time i took buckeye for his shots he was so sickly and i worried so much about it. i called the vet to see what was causing it. they told me it is just like when your children get theirs shots. sometimes they get sick and fever for a couple of days then they are ok. |
Last year, when Otis got his annual shots, he yelped when I would pick him up because the site of the shot was very very sore. This year, I learned my lesson. TWO SECONDS AFTER the shot was administered, I gently rubbed the shot site for about two minutes to get all that vaccination moving into the bloodstream. The vet saw me and didn't say anything about it, and Otis didn't squeal at all in the following days. |
That's a good idea to rub the area that the shot was given. I'll have to try that next time, thanks! |
