Karo or Nutrical??
 

Which is better to prevent/treat possible hypoglycemia? When I get my new puppy should I have both on stock?? Also should I give it to them when I suspect something or just give it to them all the time in the beginning?? Your personal preference and advice is much appreciated! :D

I think, but I'd have to look, that Nutrical has more than just sugar in it. Plus, it's easier to give for many bc it is more of a "gel" that they'll just lick right off your finger (vs. runny like karo).

Your breeder should know whether or not your pup has had hypoglycemic events - that's important to know. If she hasn't had any, she still may need some after car rides or after anything that causes sudden stress. Also, her size may matter - if she is very small, she may need more nutritional support.

I gave Marcel Nutrical every morning upon waking and right before bed - just to make sure he had something in his tummy between long lapses in feeding; I did this until he was 6 mths old. He never had any hypo events as a puppy, even w/ his breeder, but both the breeder and I thought it'd be a good preventitive measure during his transition to my home. Plus, Marcel is a tiny - so it's best to be proactive rather than reactive.

Nutrical is definitely better

Nutrical, it isn't just sugar like the Karo, it also has vitamins and minerals

My puppy had WAY too much Nutrical yesterday, hes only 1.5 lb and he had about a tablespoon (because my parents were scared that he was so severely hypoglycemic) now he's shaking and has been for hours but he's hyper...so I dont know what to do!

If your puppy is having a hypo moment and you know his sugar has dropped Kayro is a quick fix, Nutrical should be used more as a preventative ... Thier blood sugar drops after long periods of sleep without food...My Diggy is now 15 weeks but from 9-14 weeks he would wake up having seizures from blood sugar being so low. If he was actually seizing I used Kayro, he bounced right up! I gave in Nutrical throughout the days (small pea sized amounts) to prevent it from dropping. My suggestion is make sure they eat a decent size meal before bedtime and give nutrical to try and get the baby throught the night. As soon as he/she wakes up give nutrical and feed. Hopefully the hypo is a temporarything that they outgrow as they store more fat on thier bodies. Good luck with your baby and looks like your already doing a great job getting prepared!!!!

Sounds to me like his sugar was forced way way up and now he is having drops and ups. Try to give him as much kibble as he will eat...you need to regulate his sugar....I'd even call the vet....blood sugar is nothing to mess with as they can easily drop and go into seizures. If he is shaking thats not good. Watch his gums closely too if they get white or pale his sugar is unregualted. Id seriously consider taking him to the vet....such tiny bodies cannot take much. :(

Thank you so much for the help! I think that I will use Nutrical. You can't be too safe. I will be getting her at 16 weeks (:D :aimeeyork :D ) so hopefully she will have grown out of it but I will def play it safe. Also do you think Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner some snacks throughout the day, and Nutrical before bed will do...or should it be Nutrical thought the day on some sort of hourly basis????

Nutrical is a preventative. You only need to give it if the pup has hypoglycemic problems or is not eating. Then you just give a dab 3 times a day. Giving too much nutrical can cause diabetes

If your baby is 16 weeks.. I wouldnt give it at all unless you see she experiances things that cause low blood sugar....Like Extreme stress, not eating, going to vet, like I said you can check your babys gums...if they look pale and whitish Id give him a dab...but being he is 16 weeks...I think your baby is out of the usual Hypo age and should be fine! I free feed. I recommend always having food available for your baby. This breed is so little and burns so many calories so fast I do not think as a pup 3 meals a day is enough. They get distracted, or preoccupied and just dont eat sometimes. I say Diggy is Puppy ADD lol :p
Yes I do offer snacks a lot. Fresh fruits and veggies are great treats...no grapes, raisins, or onions! Diggy's favorite is green peppers! Baby carrots are high in sugar also and are a great easy treat! Apples, banannas, and strawberries are wonderful and Diggy and Bella love them! You can offer a few Cheerios here and there too! I also give a 1/2 tablespoon of Yo Baby Yogurt (human yogurt for toddlers) to both my Yorkies a day if you get it, get the one with no cereal I heard thats better.
I also scramble them an egg with shredded cheese use a no stick pan with no oil. They usually love eggs! Good luck with your baby! Let me klnow if you need anything else! If I cannot answer I will help ya find someone who can....there is always tons to learn and Im still doing so myself!

NEVER give your puppy Nutracal on a regular basis, regardless of what you may have been told. it can cause him to have diabetes because of the highs and lows in his sugar regulation. i get so upset when I see people giving it on a regular basis. it should never be given AT ALL unless needed.

Wow this is all so nerve racking :confused: ...so don't give it to her regularly, only when she's not eating or has a hyperglycemic fit? Do you think with a 16 week old puppy will even have a problem? I just don't want her to get sick when I take her to her new home.

I gave Nutrical to Conner when I first got him when he didn't eat (there was very little of this). I also gave it to him if he vomited and did would not eat (which was rare). The only other time I gave him Nutrical was after he got home when he was neutered. The vet told me to keep it on hand, but I have not had to use it since he was a little puppy. He is now 15 months old.

Don't get confused, you've received good advice :) I think basically what everyone is trying to say is, only use it if your pup is not eating regularly. That way, you can prevent a hypoglycemic attack, and only give a little tiny bit. If your dog is having a hypoglycemic attack, then rub karo or honey on his gums.

don't be confused. I have seen people on here time and time again talk about giving their pup Nutrical three times a day just as a routine. that should never be. if your puppy is showing signs of hypoglycemia, not eating, being lethargic and etc, then it's time to give the Nutrical. i only give an amount equal to the first joint of my finger and sometimes the tip of my finger. Sixteen weeks really hasn't anything to do with it. how much does the puppy weigh?
I recently had a four month old little girl have a hypoglycemic episode. i had noticed she had stopped playing and was just watching the other dogs play and knew she didn't feel well. then she started trying to vomit. I picked her up and looked at her gums. they were almost white. I Nutracaled her and within minutes she was okay.
People that use it reguarily ,I have noticed, are generally the new yorkie owners and somewhere along the way, they were given bad advice.. Please just save it for when you need it. that's all we are trying to say.
