Help - Ear scratch problem I got my puppy on Saturday. The breeder had taken her to the vet the day before. He shaves her ears and taped them. He did a lousy shave job, and she won't stop scratching (the tape is all gone now.). She has now seriously scratched the inside of her ears and they are very red inside. This is below where he shaved. How do I treat this? |
poor thing... i'd get another vet's opinion tomorrow.... but tonight why dont you try some vaseline, maybe some rubbing alcohol in case it got infected with the scratching.. but i'd be back at ANOTHER vet, especailly if you are not happy with the job he did.. chances are everything else is going to be like that too |
rub a little neosporin on those ears. |

If it doesn't go away from the tape and neosporin doesn't soon heal it, it could be ear mites. If it's mites, there's usually brown wax inside the ear. They'll scratch inside their ears like crazy and taping them makes it sooo much worse. You can actually clean her ear goop and place it on black construction paper and see the mites, they're white little bugs. Gross I know. If he has lots of brown goop, you should take him to the vet for diagnosis whether or not you see them. He/she will need medication. If you have a contract that states you have 72 hours to get your dog to the vet, do it within that time frame and ask her to pay for that medicine. The breeder shouldn't mind if it's within that time frame. HTH Susan |
I was thinking ear mites too. My Alyssa had ear mites when we got her caused by fleas. He scratched and scratched and rubbed her head on the floor to scratch even more. My vet discovered them when we went for our first check up. He showed me what they look like under a microscope. They are nasty little critters. We got drops to put in both ears once a day. That helped and she has not had ear mites again. Oh, by the way...I think floppy ears on yorkies are cute and it gives them part of their personality. |
Last month Buddy went through a lot of scratching his ear and it looked like it might be mites. I cleaned it with a cotton ball and got some brown looking gunk out of it. I took him to the vet and it turned out not to be mites, but a yeast infection. Some ointment twice a day for two weeks cleared it up, but it was really messy. Good luck. |
Thanks for the tips. :) |
You may already know this, but make sure when you bathe your baby, you try to keep water out of the ears, and dry them really well. moisture and warmth breeds yeast. I had a bulldog that was prone to them after baths because my boyfriend never tried to avoid getting water in his ears while bathing him. |
Ask the vet for Otomax, it does help with yeast infections. Also, go on to AnimalRevival.com and order some Vet Solutions ear cleaner, it cleans the ears and has a drying agent. If it is an outer ear problem ask the vet for Panalog Ointment, great for healing everything. I've used it on myself and it heals over night. |
I would not take the breeder's word that he saw a vet the day before you got him. Take him to a different vet. Gizmo also had earmites when I got him, and he was miserable until we figured it out. Oh, did the breeder say why he saw the vet? Any breeders out there...is that usual? I would worry about more serious health issues....have YOUR vet check with the breeder's vet to confirm what you were told. |
