Puppy Tears 1 Attachment(s) We have had Benji for over two weeks now and I have seen no improvement with the excessive tearing of his eyes. Do puppies grow out of this stage? I never had a problem with my American Eskimo so I'm not sure what to do. Is this common with the breed? I'm hoping it isn't permanent. I will be going to the vet in two weeks and will ask at that time, but I would love some feedback before hand if possible. Thanks in advance! :) |
I've noticed very recently that my 8 month old tears a lot. I wasn't aware that it could be a sign of a problem so I will be anxious to see what other YT'ers have to say about it. |
Tearing and tear stains are very common for this breed..... It can be caused by certain things such as diet or infection, but usually it is not problematic, just yucky looking. Biscuit had bad tearing when he was a little pup, but seemed to grow out of it. He still has eye goopies, but not nearly as bad as they once were. Willow has really bad tearing, I'm hoping she grows out of it too, but for now, I just wipe her eye area clean daily....there are products you can use, but none have seemed to work for me..... |
To my knowledge, this is normal... but i'm no pro! lol |
I have my girls on Angels Eyes, and it WORKS! I ran out of it a while back and kept forgetting to order it. My girls' eyes got SO yucky! I just ordered it again a few weeks ago and after one week back on it, their eyes cleared right up! Some people here pooh-pooh it, but it works for us! It seems expensive, but you only put a little sprinkle on their food once a day, then you taper that down to a few times a week after a few weeks. The little bottle lasts us a good three months, and I have two girls;) |
Well now I am a little worried! I'm used to the eye boogies with Chico, but not the tearing. Benjamin looks sad all the time because of them, although he is just the opposite. He is so full of energy he can light up any room. I was nervous when I got him because I've read about the problems with Yorkies as puppies: the picky eater, and the risks of hypoglycemia. But we are blessed with the perfect Yorkie...he inhales his Innova puppy food with no problem..he actually prefers his brother's adult mix even though the kibble is larger (another contradiction to some posts I've read). He is such a HOG like his big brother! Who am I kidding, he fits into this family just fine BECAUSE he is a hog like us! Sorry for getting so off-topic, but I am such a proud mommy! The tears are my only complaint. I would just like for his face to display some of his wonderful qualities. |

Yes, this is common in Yorkies...especially when they're young and their nose hair is growing out. The short hairs get in their eyes and cause tearing. However, tearing can also be caused by food allergies or allergies in general. My Riley had watery eyes when he was young but as soon as the hair on his nose grew out he was fine...my boyz are now 2 and 2 1/2 and neither of them have watery eyes. |

Any other suggestions? |

Luna gets the icky black boogies and Izzy just had excessive tearing. Both are cleared up now, with just a tiny bit of clear tears on their faces every day(normal). I wonder if they're like human babies, that when they are teething, they drool and their eyes get all watery? |
That's interesting....I didn't know babies have teary eyes when they are teething....no kids so didn't know but that would make sense because Teddi never had the teary eyes until recently and she is starting to lose her teeth. |
Tearing is really common in yorkies. Jake teared alot when he was teething, and the vet told me that giving them distilled water to drink helps alot. I tried it, and it does work! It's best to get your vet's opinion though, in case it could be an allergy or infection. |
Thank you for all the responses! Now I can rest my mind and stop obsessing over it. :) LOL :) LunasMomma: Benji says thanks for the compliment (especially since that wasn't a favorite of all his pics). |
