Tooth Descaling I have just gotten my 2 furbabies and the 4 year old has quite a bit of plaque buildup on her teeth. We've been brushing her teeth every day but it doesn't seem to help. The Vet said she need a tooth cleaning but I am loath to have her put under with an anesthetic. Yesterday, at a Pet Fair, we met a woman who does it all by hand without restraints or anesthetic. Says it takes about an hour to do. So, from the sound of it, it's like when I go to have my teeth cleaned at the Dentist but do you think having her held by a stranger and going through the whole 'scritching' process for an hour will be too traumatic? She lets us brush her teeth now and I really don't want to jeopardize that! Thanks, Lin |
Whenever you scale teeth, you leave tiny little scratches that will allow plaque and bacteria to build up even faster.... You need to polish thoroughly after scaling to buff those scratches out. Does she polish afterwards? If vets felt they could do a good enough job without anesthesia, they would... But to really get 'em clean the proper way, I don't think you have a choice but to put them under. |
I will bump this up although my only concern is if there is any infection, then how would the woman go deep enough to insure the plaque is removed? As you know, Yorkies have poor teeth and it so very important to keep them scaled and abcessed teeth removed. Good luck and post back when you decide. |

Hmmm...maybe she needs to go to the Vet, after all. |
i met a breeder at a show who does her own yorkies teeth as well. I'm not so sure its a good idea. I wouldn't let another person who's not a vet or a vet tech do this to my dog without anesthesia. KellyV is right, the teeth need to be polished afterwards. the best way to do it properly is to put them under. To get all sides of each tooth i think its impossible to have an awake dog let you put them into position to do this. Do you really think a dog will sit still for an hour while you have their mouth wide open? Also when its done under anesthesia it takes like 20 minutes |
