Need tick control for 1 week...? We're traveling to Minnesota for a week in July. After reading about the Lyme vax, I do not want to get it for my dogs. How can I protect them for a week from Lymes? Wylie is and adult (7 pounds) but Marcel is a puppy (will be 7 months old at time of travel) and only weighs 2 pounds. Any suggestions? |
Honestly I don't have a clue, but I never thought about this. I'll be taking Kobi home (to MN) for a total of over a month this summer, so now I'm worried too.... My step-dad just had Lyme's disease for the SECOND year in a row this year. It's awful! I hope someone can give us some answers. |
Yeah, I hear you. I just went to startribune.com and searched "lymes" - there are some incidence graphics and some articles as well. Basically, it says it is still endemic, worse than ever, and focused in the east/central region...exactly where I'm going! |
Are you going to the cities area? I'm going to La Crescent (right by La Crosse, WI). Hmm...I hope someone can help us. I know Omega is from MN so maybe she'll see this and suggest something... |
So I just called my vet because you had me thinking... They said they do have a vaccine, but it doesn't work very well. They suggested I just keep up with the Frontline (make sure your formula does ticks as well as fleas) and that will do a better job most likely than the vaccine. Still makes me nervous tho, and I still hope someone responds to this... |
You can get this new collar called Preventick Collar. My vet sells them. You yorkie will have to wear it for 24 hours to be effective, but from there, you can take it on and off whenever your dog needs/doesn't need protection. If I were you, I would get one of those collars and put it on him right before your trip and just take it off after your trip. It's VERY safe and is nothing like a flea collar. |

Here is some info on Preventic collars (just bought 2): Preventic Collars: * Provide safe and effective control of ticks for up to three months * Prevent new ticks from attaching and feeding within 48 hours after application * Provide over 97% effectiveness against ticks for up to three months * Kill and detach ticks * Are water resistant * Are for use on dogs only * Fit dogs of almost any size * Are safe when used as directed One of the customer reviewers said: "we have two cow dogs that at any given day you could pick 20 to 30 ticks of either one, after the collers we have not seen one single tick." |
May I ask where you found them? I kinda need it like...umm..NOW..lol Thanks in advance! |
This Preventick Collar is awesome!!!!!!! I keep one on my lab at all times. We take him on walks through the woods and he would always come home with dozens of ticks! Disgusting! Since he's been wearing this collar, he hasn't gotten a single tick. And I love that I can take it off and put it on as I need to. |
