Tooth brushing question I'm new to yorkies and have had Wickett for 5 days now. I want to make sure I do everything right, which brings me to my first question. Tooth brushing. How exactly do I go about getting him used to it? I saw the poll on how often others do it, and I'm thinking starting off doing it once a week or so would be good. My only issue is how to get him to let me in there. Any tips/advice on how to get him to be ok with that? And.....do they sell doggy tooth brushes and tooth paste at pet stores? Or do you use people products? Thank you for all your help!! |
This is all new to me also...I just received the finger toothbrush and gum massager... I am going to try every other night to use them on my lil one and hope that she gets used to them...I'm sure that there are others here who can also give you some input.... :D :D Oh....And Welcome to Yorkie Talk .... everyone here is fantastic !!!! :welcome4: |
Hi don't ever use people toothpaste, it can cause damage as they will swallow some. I use the mint flavoured from Petsmart, their brand. It is made in US and works very well and a fraction of the costs of the stuff from the Vets. I use a small toothbrush I get from my Vets, made by CET. I put a small dab of toothpaste on the back of my left hand, work the brush into the toothpaste, insert my thumb behind the canine on the right side of the dogs mouth (dog facing me) and brush gently. Each time you do it, he will get more used to it. Mine beg to be next to get their teeth brushed. You should do it pretty much daily to get him used to it and only a very quick short time. |

We started out with no toothpaste at all. Just rub their teeth and gums with your finger. Get them used to it being OK for you to be in their mouth. And I'd do it every single day. After that, I switched to chicken flavor Petrodex toothpaste on a finger brush. Again, start slow. Brushing isn't as important as getting them used to you being in there. You can start brushing more with the finger brush until you're finally working every tooth well. Eventually, you can switch to a brush. I do it every day. It's become almost a bonding thing for us. He enjoys it. |
Thank you guys for all of the suggestions. I'll start by trying to get him to let me touch his mouth and teeth (without wanting to lick me, which he loves to do) and go from there. :) |
I don't use a toothbrush. I use Petzlife for teeth gel and I just put some in their mouth a couple of nights a week and it does the trick without having to brush. |
I have to get my baby used to not licking the finger brush. Plus he's chewing my finger because the toothpaste is poultry flavored. Lucky he doesn't chew that hard. |
how often do you reccommend i brush louies teeth? |

To start, rub a little of the dog toothpaste on the bristles and with you holding onto it, let him play with it and take it in his mouth. Just do it briefly so he is used to the brush being in his mouth. Then move to a little brushing on the front teeth. Progress over time to full brush but at that age, no rush and you can get him used to it without trauma. When I start doing the teeth brushing for the day, mine all line up to be next asking for their teeth to be brushed. Make it a positive experience and it will be a positive one for life. |

With time he will get used to it and the gums won't bleed just as yours don't. Once a day is fine, couple of times a week is fine. Let him play with the tooth brush a bit with you hanging onto it so he doesn't bite it. And it will become a game for him. |
