Strange pooping behaviour...
 
Hi Guys,

Just before I call my vet again (new mummy syndrome!) I thought I'd ask you. My Lilly has displayed some very strange pooping behaviour, she poops then seems to move a few steps before trying to poop again. The second attempt seems to look like shes constipated as she pushes but nothing really comes out. Most of it has obviously already come out in the first poop attempt. After this she often seems to rub her bottom in the grass. I know the rubbing could indicate worms but I just dewormed her... Any ideas? I'm a bit worried that she might have an upset tummy or that something is bothering her...

Two things come to mind. The easiest is that sometimes not all of it drops, and they can feel it hanging there. They strain to get it off.

More likely, she needs her anal glands expressed. Your groomer or vet will often do this for you, but here's a link explaining. My groomer does it regularly, but I've found I've had to do it myself a couple times when I notice him scooting his butt across the grass.

thanks for the info!! I just wondered, if her anal glands need to be expressed then when she rubs her bottom on the floor some discharge should come out right? Only she's rubber her bottom across my cream carpet and nothing has come out...

I think it could be that there's sometimes a little poop hanging off her bottom and she's trying to get it off. Most of the time a tiny little pellet seems to drop in her second pooping attempt.

Any other signs that tell me the anal glands need to be expressed? She's only 13 weeks old so would she already have problems there?

I can't remember my guy having anal gland problems until he was over a year old, so maybe that's not it. Of course, my groomer may have been expressing the glands without my knowledge!

I think you're probably just being a typical new Yorkie mama and stressing about everything. Believe me, I did the same thing. It's only a problem if there's pain or if persists.

Edit: I just realized I didn't answer your question. No, it's not unusual if a discharge doesn't come out when they rub their butt over the ground. Some people say dogs can't discharge it on their own. I'm not sure I agree, but they don't always solve the problem immediately.

Yes I'm a fretting new mommy! Other than this she seems so happy so I'll keep an eye on it and see. We're going to our first Puppy play school tonight so I'll ask the trainer there. IF she keeps doing this then I'll call the vet (again :rolleyes: )

LOL. I still remember well a post I had just like yours. My pup coughed a couple times, and I was sure it was kennel cough. It wasn't. He just coughed!

Ah yes... I rang my vet on Sunday for a similar reason... My little Lilly was coughing and it sounded like she was chocking. It appears that our carpet fluffs a lot and she finds the fluff fascinating and so has inhaled and swallowed a bit too much of it. She now no longer chews the carpet but occasionally still coughs. We're getting a new carpet now :D

Funny how these little creatures turn our lives upside down and without a single word make us so happy!

Yep. I was just thinking the same thing earlier tonight. They are like having a perpetual infant!

Fortunately, it gets better. I only worry 90 percent of the time now. :D

If she doesn't show signs of sickness , don't worry about it .
Gazou and Heidi have the same poop behaviour and they never had problems.
When she rubs her bottom in the grass , she is naturally emptying her anal glands .
