Am I feeding enough? I just never know if Lola is getting enough to eat, and I would love to know your thoughts! Lola is just 5 months old...how much should she be eating a day? Would you say 1/2 cup total for all three meals, or 1 cup? Also, for lunch, I give her 2 tablespoons of Cottage Cheese..is that enough to hold her until dinner? I just feel like I have no idea what I'm doing?! Thanks so much! |
Do you free feed? |
Oops! No, I feed three meals throughout the day, with lunch being cottage cheese. Do you think that is ok? |
Depending on her size, 3 meals a day might not be enough, but it depends - is she gaining correctly? I always have Canidae out for grazing. Up until Marcel was 6 mths., I fed him 4 meals a day. I just switched to 3 meals (plus grazing). I usually put down about 2-3 tbs. of food each meal - and he usually finishes all of it - and he only weighs 2 pounds! He steadily gained an ounce a week when I started home cooking - and I'm thrilled with that. |
I feed three meals a day but she doesn't seem to finish any of them... I was quite worried about it but the vet gave me this flakey stuff which I soak and add to her kibble along with a teaspoon of cottage cheese for breakfast, then just kibble for lunch and kibble, cottage cheese, flakes and some boiled chicken for dinner. She seems to have normal energy levels and the vet told me not to worry that she looked healthy but I can't help thinking she's a bit skinny... ah the joys of being a worrying mum! I think if she seems happy and bouncy then don't worry but if she starts to become really lethargic and sleepy you might want to change the feeding. |
I am just a big believer in Free Feeding yorkie...with hypo running in this breed its a safe way to make sure they always have someting in their bellies...Unless there is a specific reason to not free feed Id look into it, May give you peace of mind too! :) |
She seems happy and bouncy, but I'm always worried that she's hungry?! I've thought about free feeding, but I'm still potty training, so I was trying to control the madness by having three set meals:D She doesn't love kibble, so it's been a battle to find one that she will eat for me...right now it's Chicken Soup, but she doesn't eat very much..maybe 10 kibbles if I'm lucky. Of course, she LOVES cottage cheese/yogurt, so that's lunch, and then Wellness Puppy canned for dinner, which she gobbles. I just never know how much canned to give her? Do you think 2 tablespoons sounds like enough? Thank you so much for your help! |
Oh I quite understand, her lunch time kibble is there for her all afternoon. I just don't like leaving the wet mixture out all day due to the increased risk of bacterial growth. Lilly is my first puppy and so I keep ringing my poor vet for advise! He's very patient with me and so far she seems to be a happy growing bundle of energy! But I have days I worry because she doesn't eat much... on those days I watch her carefully... well actually we spend all day every day together! |

She is such a picky eater, and it's so stressful! I wish she was like other dogs that will just eat anything?! |
well a quick way to tell if she has low blood sugar is to look at her gums is they are pale...get food in her...if they look greyish white Kayros or nutrical immediately. what is her Weight? I give diggy anything he will eat. Scrambled eggs, rice and chicken, hamburger and rice, fruits, yo-baby yogurt, basically anything you find in the toddler section is good for yorkie babis....they have dried fruits I give a lot. cheerios, chicken stix (look like hot dogs) mix a 1/2 jar of 1st food baby veggies or meats in with kibble. Diggy prefers sweet potatoes, and green beans. Just do what you have to do to get healthy food in their bellies...as they grow and get older they seem to regulate themselves better and eat when they are hungry. (we hope) lol :D :D |
