The tips of Hobbs' ears are black and crusty -- what could it be? It started on one ear and before I knew it, the other ear was just like it. It's like a black spot that is crusty on the very tips of each ear. What in the world could it be? Should I be concerned?????? |
i find the tips of Layla's ears to be the same.. just not black... i just try and scrub them when i bathe her... but it's hard because she it picky about her ears being touched... i think they are just dry... |
My first thought was leather ear, but reading about leather ear, it seems it is more slimy than crusty. It starts with black edges around the edges of the ears. If you go here and scroll down (quite a ways...to where you see two pics of yorkies. you can read about leather ear to see if it sounds like it could be that. Good luck! http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm |
I think it might be leather ear and yes you should be concerned. It will onlys spread on the ear and get worse with out treatment. Contact your vet for diagnosis and treatement remedies. |
I found this in my medical book: FLY-BITE DERMATITIS Biting flies can attack the face and ears of dogs, sucking blood and inflicting painful bites over the tips or bent folds of the ears. These bites are typically scabbed, crusty black and bleed easily. German Shepherd Dogs, Collies and other breeds with erect ears are most susceptible. Treatment: Keep the dog indoors during the day until the wounds are healed. If you are unable to do so, apply insect repellant to the ear tips and keep them clean and dry to discourage flies. Infected ear tips should be treated with a topical antibiotic ointment such as triple antibiotic. |
Thanks. I'll contact my vet and see what she says. |
